
QU Softball Falls to Army and Green Bay at the USF Under Armour Showcase

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Quinnipiac softball team was swept in a doubleheader on the first day of the USF Under Armour Showcase on Friday afternoon. The Bobcats dropped the first game to Army West Point, 7-6, before falling to the University of Wisconsin Green Bay, 7-1.
The Bobcats held multiple leads against the Black Knights in the first game, but were unable to hold off Army in their last at bats. Quinnipiac recorded eight hits in the game with senior Sydney Robey (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) and junior Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) leading the way with two hits apiece. Robey went 2-for-4 at the plate while Finley was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in.
Robey received the loss on the mound, but gave up just two earned runs over seven innings pitched while striking out three batters.
After the Bobcats put down the Black Knights in order to begin the game, Quinnipiac quickly took the lead with two runs in their first at bats. Senior Abby Johnson (Chelmsford, Massachusetts) led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to third after a wild pitch and a ground out. Johnson came around to score as
Dani Edmands (Northborough, Massachusetts) reached first base on a throwing error by the Army pitcher. Consecutive singles by Robey and Finley then put Edmands on third with just one out. The senior catcher gave QU a 2-0 lead on a ground ball out by sophomore Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California).
The Black Knights answered in the top of the third by scoring three runs off two hits and an error. With bases loaded after a miscue by the Bobcat infield, back-to-back base hits gave Army a 3-2 lead. The Black Knights tried to extend the lead but Quinnipiac caught an Army runner in a rundown to end the inning.
The Bobcats rebounded in the bottom of the inning with two runs off one hit and three Black Knight errors. Robey led off the frame with a single up the middle but was thrown out at second when the next batter grounded into a fielder's choice. With one out, Magana and freshman Erin Larsen (Orlando, Florida) reached base on back-to-back defensive miscues by the Army infield to score a run and tie the game. The second run crossed the plate after a walk loaded the bases before Maria Ascher (Little Canada, Minnesota) sent the runner home by reaching on another Army error.
Trailing 4-3, the Black Knights regained the lead with two more runs in the fourth. With two runners in scoring position, Army scored consecutive runs off a passed ball and sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Quinnipiac captured one run to tie the game at 5-5. Sophomore Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) then smacked a triple to right field and came around to score on a bunt by Ascher.
The Bobcats took a 6-5 advantage in the bottom of the sixth with two hits in the inning. Freshman Sarah Heimbach (Greenwich, New York) led off with a walk and advanced to third on a single by Edmands. With two outs, Finley stepped up to the plate and brought home Heimbach with a single to left field.
Army took the lead for good with two runs off two hits and an error in the top of the seventh. The tying run scored on an error by the Bobcat infield before the winning run crossed the plate when the next batter singled to the pitcher with two outs.
The Black Knights then held off Quinnipiac in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.
Quinnipiac took a 1-0 lead in the second game but eventually fell to the Green Bay Phoenix, 7-1. The Bobcats finished the game with eight hits while Edmands, Heimbach and sophomore Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) all went 2-for-3 in the contest.

Green Bay held the Bobcats scoreless the rest of the way while they jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning before scoring three more in the final frame.
The Bobcats will continue the tournament in Clearwater with games against Western Michigan and Butler on Saturday, Mar. 12. Quinnipiac will meet the Broncos at 9:15 a.m. before a contest against the Bulldogs at 2 p.m.
