EMMITSBURG, Md. – Sophomore wing Emily Roskopf (Pleasanton, Calif.) had three tries and an assist as the defending national champion Quinnipiac women's rugby team closed out the regular season with a 41-22 win over Penn State on Saturday afternoon at Mt. St. Mary's University.
The Bobcats used a 29-0 run to take control of the match after trailing 17-12 in the first half, and now enter next week's NIRA playoffs with an 8-1 overall record (7-1 NIRA). Penn State slips to 9-3-1 on the year with the loss.
The game served as an unofficial homecoming for senior fullback Maggie Myles (Emmitsburg, Md.), who was playing in her home town in her final regular season game and had a second-half try in the match. Myles and six other Quinnipiac seniors were honored last weekend for their Senior Day, a 38-34 win over AIC.
Penn State struck first and the teams alternated tries through most of the first half, before the Bobcats seized momentum just before the break. Roskopf's second try, with just under 10 minutes left in the half, gave Quinnipiac its first lead at 19-17. Senior flank Tayler Schussler (Westminster, Md.) then closed out the first half with a try just before the break off a pass from junior scrum half Mason Johnson (Olympia, Wash.), making the score 26-17 at the break after senior Madison Gegeckas (Downington, Pa.) had a successful conversion.
The momentum carried over into the second half, as Roskopf converted her third try, all of which were assisted by junior center Ilona Maher (Burlington, Vt.), extending the Bobcat lead to 31-17. Midway through the second half, Penn State advanced the ball all the way down to the Quinnipiac try line looking to close the gap, but the Bobcat defense came up big to hold the Nittany Lions back and maintain the two-possession lead.
Just moments later, Myles scored her homecoming try when she took an offload pass from Poole just over midfield and scampered in to give the Bobcats a commanding 36-17 lead. Roskopf then found space up the sideline and assisted on a try from sophomore wing Caitria Sands (Essex, Vt.) to extend Quinnipiac's run to 29 straight points, making the score 41-17. Penn State added a harmless try late to make the final score 41-22
Penn State scored in the opening minutes of the contest for a quick 7-0 lead, but the Bobcats answered right back to tie it 7-7 on a try from junior wing Flora Poole (Christchurch, New Zealand). The Nittany Lions then went ahead 12-7 midway through the first half, but Quinnipiac answered minutes later with a Roskopf score to tie it back up 12-12.
Quinnipiac will enter the NIRA playoffs next weekend as the defending national champions, after defeating Army a year ago (at Brown) in the finals. The quarterfinals will be held at campus sites on the weekend of Nov. 12, before the semifinals and finals at Army on Nov. 18-20.
