BELFAST, Northern Ireland – Nationally-ranked No. 3/4 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey lost to No. 20 Vermont, 5-1, in the Championship Game of the 2016 Friendship Four at SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 9-4-2 overall while Vermont improves to 9-3-2 on the year.
Craig Martin (Trail, British Columbia) scored the Bobcats' only goal of the tournament, late in the third period against Vermont, for his fifth of the year. Quinnipiac assist-leader Brogan Rafferty (Dundee, Illinois) picked up his team-best 12th assist on the play while Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) had his ninth assist of the year.
Vermont's Ross Colton put the Catamounts out in front with his fifth goal of the season and second of the Friendship Four just under six minutes into the game. Colton picked off a pass in the neutral zone and took off down the ice before skating across the crease and beating Quinnipiac goalie Andrew Shortridge (Anchorage, Alaska) to give UVM a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the period, Mario Puskarich potted his fifth of the year to give Vermont a 2-0 lead. Craig Puffer picked up a loose puck deep in the Bobcats defensive zone and spied Puskarich in the slot. His pass across the crease found Puskarich's tape and his one-timer past Shortridge gave the Catamounts a two-goal lead through the first period.
With a minute and seventeen seconds remaining in the second period, Vermont's Jarrid Privitera tipped a shot from the point by Rob Hamilton through several bodies and past Shortridge to give the Catamounts a 3-0 lead heading into the second intermission.
Martin's power-play goal pulled the Bobcats to within two goals at 3-1. Priskie started the play along the boards and sent the puck to Rafferty on the point. Rafferty walked between the face-off circles and dropped a pass to Martin in the opposite circle who rifled a shot on goal.
Vermont was quick to answer as Colton scored his second of the game just forty-nine seconds later followed by Derek Lodermeier's third of the season to give the Catamounts a 5-1 lead with 11:06 to play.
Quinnipiac resumes ECAC Hockey play when it hosts Rensselaer on Friday, Dec. 2 and Union on Saturday, Dec. 3. The Bobcats match-up against the Dutchmen can be seen live on SNY as well as TSN2 in Canada.
