BOSTON, Massachusetts – The Quinnipiac women's cross country team put together a 16th place showing out of 35 teams on Saturday morning at the New England Championships from Franklin Park.
Running for the first time in 2016, senior standout Niamh Ashe (East Islip, New York) broke out in a big way as she led the Bobcats with an eighth place finish out of 234 runners. The sensational effort gives Ashe her third career All-New England honor in three career appearances at the event. After missing the first three meets of the season with injury, Ashe returned to form with a solid performance and time of 18:06.6.
Making just her second career appearance at the New England Championships, senior Cameron Chaplen (Thomaston, Connecticut) showed well with a 93rd place result as she crossed the line in 19:17.4. Chaplen's solid performance put her in second place on the team as she placed second or better on the Bobcats for just the third time in her career.
Adding some solid depth for the Bobcats was a second grouping led by freshman Sara Wilcox (Glastonbury, Connecticut) who managed to take 118th place with a time of 19:33.8. Following close behind the rookie was fifth-year Medinah Nabadduka (Windsor, Connecticut) who landed just two spots behind Wilcox with a 120th place finish, crossing the line in 19:35.2. Rounding out the top five on the day for the Bobcats was junior Harmony Grodsky (Upper Brookville, New York) who placed 141st with a time of 19:48.4.
The two remaining Bobcats to see the course in the varsity event included junior Darby Ginley (Warwick, New York) and Meghan Curtin (Cohocton, New York). Ginley landed in 172nd place (20:11.7) while Curtin placed 195th (20:59.9).
Quinnipiac also fielded several competitors in the sub-varsity event in which the Bobcats placed ninth out of 15 teams. Sophomore Maria Ricalton (Canton, New York) was the fastest Bobcat in the sub-varsity championship as she placed 35th with a time of 19:38.
Next up for the Bobcats is a huge spotlight meet as Quinnipiac heads to the Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana for the first time in program history on Saturday, October 15. The national meet draws powerhouse programs from around the nation as they attempt to prepare their athletes at the site of the 2016 NCAA Championships (Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course).
