QU Women’s Cross Country Places 15th in First-Ever Pre-National Invitational Appearance

Niamh Ashe Continues Her Career-Long Streak of 17 Straight Appearances Placing First on the Team

TERRE HAUSE, Indiana – Racing against some of the most elite talent in the nation, the Quinnipiac women's cross country team showed well and put together a 15th place finish in the Women's White 6k from the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course on Saturday afternoon.
Competing alongside the likes of Oregon State, Wake Forest, Nevada, UTEP, Oakland, Miami (Ohio), Wichita State, Central Michigan, TCU, Gonzaga, Nebraska and Cincinnati, Quinnipiac performed well racing in the most talented field they will face all season. Oregon State claimed the team victory in the event with 114 points while Wake Forest (131), Nevada (166), UTEP (182) and Oakland (182) rounded out the top five. The Bobcats totaled 329 points to finish ahead of Nebraska, Liberty, Cincinnati and Ohio, among others.
The star of the day was senior Niamh Ashe (East Islip, New York) who managed a 33rd place finish out of a field of 168 runners. Setting the tone for the Bobcats on the day, Ashe continues her career-long string which now stands at 17 straight appearances in which she has finished first on the team. Ashe set the pace and clocked in at 22:01.7 in the 6k event.
Coming in support of the Bobcats' top runner was junior Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Connecticut) who continues her strong season placing 56th overall and second on the team. Through three appearances in 2016, Roberts has finished no worse than second on the team as she led the Bobcats at the Paul Short Run while landing second place finishes at Pre-Nationals and the Iona Meet of Champions. Roberts crossed the line in 22:25.1.
The Bobcats' trademark depth shown through on Saturday as junior Emily Wolff (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) and Kaitlin Bakas (South Windsor, Connecticut) grouped right behind Roberts in 63rd and 64th place, respectively. Running alongside Roberts throughout the event, Wolff outkicked her freshman teammate Bakas in the closing seconds as Wolff managed a time of 22:33. Bakas clocked in at less than one second behind with a time of 22:33.9.
Rounding out the top five for the Bobcats was junior Katey Veron (Franklin Square, New York) who placed 118th overall with a time of 23:21.7.
Quinnipiac faces a quick turnaround for their next meet as the Bobcats will compete in the CCSU Mini Meet on Friday, Oct. 21 at 3 PM held at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain.
