NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac field hockey was dealt a heartbreaker, falling 2-1 in overtime to Providence in a BIG EAST Conference match-up at Yale University's Johnson Field in New Haven, Conn. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 2-10 overall and 2-2 in the BIG EAST while Providence improves to 10-3 on the year including a 3-1 BIG EAST mark.
The Bobcats loss was their fourth in overtime this year as well as its seventh loss by a single goal this year. Senior captain Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut) scored the Bobcats' game-tying goal moments after Providence jumped out to a 1-0 lead, while she also added to her NCAA Division I-leading defensive save total with her 11th of the season. Olivia Golini (York, Maine) took the hard-luck loss after a brilliant afternoon that saw the freshman goaltender rack-up seven saves.
Providence threated early in the second half and were able to capitalize on an offensive rush on Quinnipiac goalkeeper Olivia Golini (York, Maine). Kali Kilmer fired a shot on goal that Golini kicked away but Sylvia Miller was able to settle the deflected shot to the right of the cage. Kilmer then flipped a shot on goal that found room over Golini's shoulder and rattled into the top left corner to give the Friars a 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats responded moments later when they earned a corner just under the 30-minute mark. Michelle Federico (Cheshire, Connecticut) handed the ball to stick-stop Dayna Barlow (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) who stopped it for Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut). King played the ball to her left for Lauren Belskie (Hillsborough, New Jersey) who touch-passed it back to King at the top of the circle. King's shot on goal traveled through traffic and beat Providence's Megan Guilbert to tie the game at 1-1.
Less than three minutes into overtime, Providence earned a corner and coverted when Adrienne Houle took a pass at the top of the circle, drew two defenders and then slid a pass to Megan Hamilton for her fifth goal of the season.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Monday, Oct. 10 when it travels to Providence, Rhode Island for a non-conference tilt at Brown. The Bobcats return home on Friday, Oct. 14 to hold Old Dominion for a pivotal BIG EAST Conference match-up at 11:30 a.m. at Yale University's Johnson Field in New Haven, Connecticut.
