QU Women's Tennis falls to UConn, 4-3

STORRS, Conn. – Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut), Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) and Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) earned singles wins, but it wasn't enough as the Quinnipiac women's tennis team fell to UConn 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon.
Horton won her matchup at No. 1 singles against UConn's Emma Alderman, to earn her team-leading 17th victory of the season.
The Huskies (1-1, 0-0 AAC) swept all three doubles matches against the Bobcats (0-1, 0-0 MAAC) to take the doubles point and jump out to a 1-0 lead. Horton and Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) took on UConn's Alderman and Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva, but the Huskies' duo pulled away late to win, 6-3. With one match in the books, Rencheli and Rodriguez took on Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph and Gillian Perrotta. Rencheli and Rodriguez battled hard, but ultimately fell 6-3.
In the final doubles match, Alexandra Mircea (Glen Rock, New Jersey) and Kelsi Oliphant (Calgary, Alberta) took on Jacqueline Lazaro and Summer Walker, but lost 6-0, giving a 1-0 lead.
Horton got things going in the No. 1 singles match, defeating Alderman 7-5 and 7-6 in straight set. Rencheli followed with a victory of her own, defeating Pletnyeva 6-4 and 6-1 in straight sets, giving Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead on the day.
UConn was able to tie the score at two after the No. 3 singles match. Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) took on Fitz-Randolph, but lost 7-5 and 6-2 in straight sets. Quinnipiac had a chance to regain the lead in the No. 4 singles match where Young took on Walker. Walker was able to best Young 6-3 and 6-2 in straight sets, giving UConn a 3-2 lead.
Quinnipiac was able to battle back in the No. 5 singles match, when Rodriguez beat UConn's Shea Flanagan 6-3 in straight sets, tying the score at 3-3 on the day. In the tiebreaker match, Nicole Katzarkov (Coral Gables, Florida) went up against UConn's Perrotta. Katzarkov battled hard, but ultimately fell 6-0 and 6-2 in straight sets, giving UConn the 4-3 win.
The Quinnipiac women's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 5 when the team travels to take on the Sacred Heart Pioneers at 3 P.M.
