Rachel Horton advances to Second Round of Main Draw Singles at ITA Northeast Regional

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac women's tennis senior Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) earned a hard-fought victory in the singles main draw on day two of the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament hosted by the University of Pennsylvania Friday afternoon.
The Bobcat duos of Horton and Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) as well as Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) and Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) each earned a first round victory in the doubles main draw, before suffering losses in the second round. Horton went on to win in her only main draw singles match of the day, advancing to the second round of competition.
The day began in the main doubles draw bracket, where Rencheli and Rodriguez teamed up to take on the Marist duo of Ariel Shulman and Caroline Lozo. The Bobcat duo was able to outlast the Marist duo, defeating them 8-5. Young and Horton then took to the court to match-up with Laura Gutierrez and Raksha Bode of St. Francis (PA.). Young and Horton defeated the Red Flash duo, 8-4.
In the second round of doubles competition, Rencheli and Rodriguez took on Priyanka Shah and Marika Iinuma of Cornell, while Young and Horton took on Ashley Zhu and Kana Daniel of the University of Pennsylvania.
Rodriguez and Rencheli battled hard, but narrowly fell to Shah and Iinuma 8-6, eliminating the pair from the doubles main draw bracket. Horton and Young followed and tried to earn a win to advance to the Round of 16, but could not do so. The Bobcat duo battled hard but lost to Zhu and Daniel, 8-4.
Later in the day, Horton participated in the singles main draw, where she took on Risa Takenaka of Providence. Horton fell in the first set, 7-6 (6), but won the second set 6-1. Horton was able to complete the comeback to win the match with a 6-3 victory in the final and deciding set.
With the win, Horton will be back in action on day three of the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament in the singles main draw bracket. Horton will take on the No. 3 seed Jessica Livianu of Saint John's.
