NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's tennis team needed to pick up a pair of individual victories in qualifying matches at the ITA Northeast Regional Tournament hosted by Yale University Thursday afternoon in order to advance into the main draw of singles competition, but could not do so.
Sitilia Rencheli (Sarasota, Florida) and Jennifer Lu (Cypress, California) each lost in the qualifying first round, falling just short of reaching the second round of competition for a chance to reach the singles main draw.
Rencheli took on UConn's Jacquelyn Lazaro in her match-up, while Lu was matched-up with Annie DiMuro of Binghamton. Rencheli dropped the first set to Lazaro, 6-1, but came back and battled to a 6-3 win in the second set. In the deciding set, Rencheli fought hard but ultimately lost 6-4, eliminating her from singles competition. Lu competed hard against DiMuro, but narrowly lost 6-3 in straight sets.
Several Quinnipiac women's tennis players will still be in action on Friday as main draw singles and doubles get underway. Rachel Horton (Stamford, Connecticut) will compete in the singles main draw, while also teaming up with Sydney Young (Austin, Texas) in the doubles main draw. Rencheli and Layla Rodriguez (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) will also be competing in doubles play together.
Qualifying Singles:
Lazaro (UConn) def. Rencheli (QU): 6-1, 3-6, 6-4
DiMuro (Binghamton) def. Lu (QU): 6-3, 6-3
