BIG SHOWDOWN
The Quinnipiac women's rugby team heads to the west coast to take on Central Washington in a big matchup of collegiate rugby powerrs. The Bobcats have won 11 straight, including the national championship game last year (over Army), while the last loss they suffered was against Central Washington a year ago at home 33-12. Both teams are undefeated this year against NIRA competition, with the Bobcats at 5-0 and Central Washington coming in at 3-0.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Central Washington comes in at 5-2 on the season, but 3-0 against United States colleges after splitting four matches in Canada to start the year. Their wins against U.S. Colleges have been in lopsided fashion, defeating Army 63-17, Norwich 85-18 and American International 57-29.
OVERALL AGAINST BROWN
Quinnipiac is 0-2 all-time against Central Washington. In addition to the 33-12 loss at home last year, the Bobcats also suffered a narrow 22-17 loss in their first trip to Ellensburg back in the 2014 season.
LAST TIME OUT
Junior center Flora Poole had three tries to lead a balanced Quinnipiac offense that saw six different players score its first six tries in a 77-7 road win over Brown last weekend. Senior flanker Tayler Schussler, senior flanker Hailey Wyatt and junior center Ilona Maher each added two. The Bobcats also continued a remarkable run of dominance since trailing 19-17 at the half at Army in its season opener on Sept. 1. Since then, the Bobcats have outscored their opponents by a combined 230-15.
THIS STREAK GOES TO ELEVEN
Quinnipiac enters this weekend with an 11-match win streak, dating back to a regular season loss to Central Washington a year ago. The Bobcats rebounded to win their final six matches of last season, including three in the national tournament, and have begun this season with five straight wins to stretch the win streak to 11.
DEE-FENSE
Quinnipiac has been on a remarkable run defensively, holding its last four opponents to single digits in scoring and allowing only two tries in the last 3 1/2 games. After trailing Army 19-17 at the half in the season opener, the Bobcats outscored the Black Knights 15-0 in the second half to come away with the win. Quinnipiac then earned a 44-0 shutout win over AIC, the first shutout for the program since a win over UConn in 2012. A penalty conversion from Norwich late in the first half ended the shutout streak on Sept. 17, but the Cadets were unable to break into the try zone as the Bobcats rolled to a 64-3 win. Notre Dame finally crossed over the line in the second half on Sept. 24 in a 30-5 Bobcat win, ending a tryless streak of 255 minutes for Quinnipiac, while Brown managed a single try in last weekend's 77-7 Quinnipiac win. Since halftime against Army, the Bobcats are outscoring their opponents by a whopping 230-15.
COMING UP NEXT
Quinnipiac will travel to Vermont to face Castleton, a first-year varsity program, next weekend for a 12 p.m. contest.
