BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania – The Quinnipiac women's cross country team picked up a 25th place finish out of 45 teams in the Women's Gold 6k at the 43rd annual Paul Short Run held on the campus of Lehigh University. The junior duo of Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Connecticut) and Emily Wolff (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) led the way for the Bobcats as they placed 65th and 79th overall, respectively.
Competing against some of the most elite competition the nation has to offer, the Bobcats showed well against the likes of Division I powers Yale (92), Georgetown (119), Penn (127), West Virginia (127) and Florida (175) who combined to make up the top five finishing teams on the day. Quinnipiac's top seven finishers totaled 774 points.
Roberts picked up the best performance of the day as she crossed the line in 65th place, finishing as the fastest Bobcat in a meet for the first time in her career. Her 65th place result also stands as her highest-finishing spot in her third appearance at the Paul Short Run, besting her 79th place finish from last season. Roberts clocked in at 21:02 to easily eclipse her previous-best time at the event of 21:47 which also came in 2015.
Running alongside Roberts for most of the race was Wolff as the junior duo finished back-to-back on the team leaderboard for the 13th straight time in their careers. Wolff placed 79th overall out of a field of 405 competitors as she managed to post a time of 21:11 running in the most crowded and talented field the Bobcats have seen all season.
Leading the second wave of Bobcat runners on the day as freshman Kaitlin Bakas (South Windsor, Connecticut) as the first-year managed to place 158th overall with a time of 21:45. Bakas' third straight appearance to start the season was another solid performance as the rookie continues to establish herself, placing no worse than third on the team in all three meets in 2016.
Rounding out the Bobcats' top five on the day was junior Katey Veron (Franklin Square, New York) and freshman Ellie Songer (Webster, New York) as the pair placed 271st and 278th, respectively. Veron crossed the line with a time of 22:33 while Songer was not far as she clocked in at 22:38.
Completing the scoring by placing sixth and seventh on the team was freshman Amy Laverty (Cumberland, Rhode Island) and senior Cameron Chaplen (Thomaston). Laverty came up with a 333rd place finish and time of 22:58 while Chaplen came through with a time of 23:06 that was good enough for 341st place.
Quinnipiac is back in action next weekend as the Bobcats head to Franklin Park in Boston for the New England Championships on Saturday, Oct. 8.
