STORRS, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac University field hockey lost to nationally-ranked No. 1 UConn, 7-0, in a non-conference match-up at George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. The loss drops Quinnipiac to 0-3 on the year while UConn improves to 3-0.
UConn's Charlotte Veitner scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season early in the first half to stake the Huskies to a 1-0 lead. Megan Palmisano handled the ball, walking across the end line before dishing a pass between two Bobcat defenders. Her pass found Veitner's stick who maneuvered around a player and lifted a shot over a lunging Conaboy to give UConn the early advantage.
Leading by a goal, UConn's Anna Middendorf took a feed at the top of the circle off a penalty corner and unleashed a blast on goal. Quinnipiac's Angie King (South Windsor, Conn.) stepped in front of the blast and kicked it away for her team-leading second defensive save of the season. Quinnipiac was the NCAA Division I statistical leader with 13 defensive saves in 2014, with King posting a team and MAAC-high five.
Veitner gave UConn a 2-0 lead after Mackenzie Townsend fed her with a beautiful lead pass behind the Bobcats defense. Veitner, crashing to the turf, slashed at the ball and popped it over Conaboy to give UConn a two-goal lead.
With just under four minutes to play, Amanda Collins dribbled along the right wing, deep into the Bobcats' defensive zone before zipping hard pass in front of Quinnipiac's goal. Montana Fleming was able to get a stick on the ball to re-direct it past Conaboy and give UConn a 3-0 lead. Veitner scored her third of the half with just under 20 seconds left in the first frame as UConn took a 4-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Casey Umstead scored three times before the second half was halfway completed, pushing her season to five. Umstead's first goal came off a penalty stroke while her second came off an assist from Kendall Youngblood to give the Huskies a 7-0 lead. Her third marker, which was set up by Middendorf, pushed UConn's lead to seven goals.
