HANOVER, New Hampshire – Quinnipiac women's golf freshman Luciana Tobia (La Paz, Bolivia) tied the program record for the best 18-hole round in Bobcats' history, carding a 70 (-2) on the second day of the Dartmouth Invitational at the Hanover Country Club. Tobia's two-under tally was also the best round of the two-day tournament.
"After getting off to a rough start yesterday – today was just a spectacular day," head coach John O'Connor said. "Luciana [Tobia] shooting a 70 as a freshman is wonderful. She bounced back and shot a two-under par after a tough disqualification yesterday."
Tobia's second-day 70 tied Nicole Scola's (Westerly, Rhode Island) second round score at the 2013 Dartmouth Invitational for the best round in program history. Tobia shot a 79 on Saturday, but signed off on a scorecard that indicated a score of 78. The first-year Bobcat caught the mistake and reported herself, which resulted in a disqualification. With a 79 from Saturday, Tobia's 149 would have been good for a tie of fourth place.
"Nicole Scola was great again, improving from yesterday to finish as our top scorer," O'Connor said. "The 304 we shot today smashes the old record record of a one-day score of 313."
As a team, Quinnipiac broke two team records with the best 18-hole (304) and 36-hole (632) score in program history. The Bobcats' second-round score beats the 313 which was set on the second round of the Brown Bear Invitational on Apr. 13, 2015. In addition, Quinnipiac bested its all-time best team round of 633, which was set at last year's MAAC Championship.
The Bobcats second day score helped them jump three spots in the final standings as they finished sixth in the 10-team field. Dartmouth's A team finished first, followed by Hartford, Boston University, Albany and Central Connecticut State ahead of the Bobcats. Quinnipiac placed ahead of Dartmouth's B team, Fairfield, Sacred Heart and Siena.
Scola led the Bobcats for the tournament, bouncing back from an 80 on Saturday to shoot a 77 (+5) for the second round on Sunday. Scola's 157 (+13) was good for a tie of 16th place – up five spots from the previous days' finish. Freshman Julia Kemmling (Berlin, Connecticut) shed three strokes off her score from the first day of play (80) to shoot a 77 for the second round and head into the clubhouse with a 159 (+15) for a tie of 21st place.
"Jenn Whaley shot a nice 80, and Julia Kemmling and Caitlan Blydenburgh both found ways to find their ways in the 70's," O'Connor said. "This is a good sign of things to come."
Caitlan Blydenburgh (Castleton, New York) also dropped three strokes to finish two shots behind Kemmling and tied for 27th place. Blydenburgh shot an 82 on Saturday and improved to a 79 on Sunday for a two-day 161 (+17). Jenn Whaley (Farmington, Connecticut) was five shots better on Sunday from her first day total, matching an 80 with a first-day total of 85 for a +21 165.
The Bobcats are back in action next weekend when they compete in the Princeton Invitational at Springdale Golf Course in Princeton, New Jersey on Oct. 2-3.
