Storrs, Conn. – Three members of the Quinnipiac men's tennis team reached their respective flight semifinals as the second day of competition continued at the UConn Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Sophomores Kyle Alper (Dix Hills, New York), Julian Rozenstein (Marlboro, New Jersey) and Willem van Biezen (Warmond, The Netherlands) each won two matches on the second day of competition to add to the Bobcats impressive performance to start the season. All three are tied for second on the team with 13 victories early on this season, while all three are tied for the most singles victories with seven.
Also adding wins for the Bobcats were Kei Ezaka (Ojai, California), Luke Roser (Bernardsville, New Jersey) and Ryoma Haraguchi (New York, New York) to give the Quinnipiac men's tennis team nine individual victories on the afternoon. With Roser's singles victory, he maintains the most individual victories on the team with 14.
In the Flight "A" North bracket, Alper and Rozenstein combined for four wins on their way to a semifinal berth. Alper opened up his day with a straight set victory of Sacred Heart's Anthony Savio, cruising to the 6-3, 6-3 win. Later in the afternoon, Alper continued to shine as he held off Bentley's Dylan Granat after a second set battle, with Alper winning 6-3, 7-5. Alper will faced Bentley's Brendan McCarthy in Sunday's semifinal matchup with a spot in the finals on the line.
Rozenstein breezed into the quarterfinals with a strong 6-1, 6-2 straight set victory over Hartford's Bryan Einstoss in the first round of play. In his second match, Rozenstein nearly won in two sets but Bryant's Jorge Ortiz-Garcia forced a third set with Rozenstein prevailing, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 10-8. Rozenstein advances to face UConn's Parker Goldstein in the semifinals on Sunday. If both Alper and Rozenstein win in the semifinals, they will face each other in the North finals.
In Flight "B" West bracket action, van Biezen breezed past the competition into the semifinals, dropping just three games through both his matches. The Bobcat opened up his afternoon against Merrimack's Tayyab Sheikh as van Biezen blanked Sheikh, 6-0, 6-0. After shutting out Sheikh, van Biezen advanced to the quarterfinals where he faced Bentley's Daniel Camacho, cruising to another straight set win, 6-1, 6-2. Van Biezen will face UConn's Jack McLister in the semifinals on the final day of competition at the UConn Invitational.
Haraguchi also was placed in the West bracket, picking up a first round victory before getting knocked out in the quarterfinals. Haraguchi opened the day against Sacred Heart's Derek Chapman, as Haraguchi won the first set before Chapman came back to win the second set and force a third set. Haraguchi pulled through in the final set, winning 6-3, 3-6, 10-6. In the quarterfinals, it was much of the same for Haraguchi as he won the first set against Bryant's Mike Plutt, but Plutt came from behind to take the match, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Roser followed the trend of winning in the first round as he picked up a win against Sacred Heart's Francisco de Valle, 6-3, 6-3 for his 14th individual victory. Roser then ran into Bryant's Scott Plutt in the quarterfinals, falling to the Bulldog, 6-4, 6-2.
Ezaka took the court for the Bobcats in the Flight "A" South Bracket, taking on Merrimack's Mikhail Belov in singles action but Ezaka fell in the first round, 6-4, 6-1. Ezaka rebounded in the Flight "A" consolation bracket where he prevailed against Bentley's George Samander, 8-4. Ezaka will face Hartford's Alex Romaine in the semifinals of the Consolation South Bracket.
