NORTHFIELD, VT – The Quinnipiac women's rugby team improved to 3-1 on the season and in NCVWRA play as they took down the Norwich Cadets, 48-19. Freshman back Emily Roskopf (Pleasanton, California) and sophomore transfer Ilona Maher (Burlington, Vermont) led the Bobcats with two tries each on the way to the victory.
After the game head coach Becky Carlson stated, "This game marks the first time in Bobcat Rugby history that we get the W over Norwich so it feels good." The Bobcats entered the matchup 0-2 all-time against the perennial powerhouse.
The Cadets dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in NCVWRA action. Norwich has reached the championship in each of the last three seasons, including back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013.
"We went out with a specific plan of attack to focus on possession at the breakdown and we stuck to our guns and followed the plan," said Carlson. "The stars of the show were the entire team as we spread our scoring out across many players and our forwards absolutely showed up huge in our set pieces and opened up the field for our backs."
Roskopf now leads the team with 10 tries through her first four games of her collegiate career. The freshman also added two assists, four tackles and one run over 20 yards.
Meanwhile, Maher posted a monumental performance against her former team. The transfer recorded two huge 40 yard runs for back-to-back tries in the second half to help the team pull away. On the day, Maher recorded four runs over twenty. Her two scores in her home state ups her season total to five after scoring three in the 2015 opener against the College of Notre Dame. Maher also tied the team high with five tackles in the game.
Juniors Maggie Myles (Emmitsburg, Maryland) and Lindey Wise (Franklin, Wisconsin) were both game changers in new positions against Norwich. Myles took the field at scrum half while Wise transitioned to fly half. Both players were incredibly effective in their new positions, setting the pace, energy and composure of the game.
Myles was impressive from both sides of the field, notching her third try of the season while also adding an assist. Defensively, Myles tied Maher with a team-high five tackles against the Cadets.
Wise led the squad with three assists, adding one tackle and a run over twenty.
The Bobcats controlled the game by registering 10 lineouts to the opposition's four. Quinnipiac had six in the opening forty minutes to the Cadets' zero. They took two scrums in the first half while Norwich tallied four. In the second half, the Bobcats recorded four to the Cadets' six.
Junior Madison Gegeckas (Dowington, Pennsylvania) scored 10 points in the game, going 4-for-8 from the conversion mark while Jessica Maricich (Lansing, Illinois) and Raechel Stimson (Cameron Park, California) each recorded a try in the Quinnipiac victory.
The Bobcats are back in action next Saturday, October 3 when they host Life University. Quinnipiac welcomes the Running Eagles to the QU Rugby Field for a 12 p.m. showdown.
