HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's rugby team improved to 4-1 on the season with a hard fought 19-5 victory over Life University on Saturday afternoon. Junior fly half Maggie Myles (Emmitsburg, Maryland) led the Bobcats' offense with two tries and an assist while sophomore Ilona Maher added a third Quinnipiac try to help guide the Bobcats to their third straight win.
In the first half, Quinnipiac dominated on the defensive end, giving Life very few opportunities to score. The Running Eagles had a great chance to convert an early try and take the lead just minutes into the game, but were stopped short by the Bobcats' tough defense.
With 28 minutes to play in the opening frame, Quinnipiac broke the scoreless tie with Myles first try of the game. The junior received the ball off an assist from sophomore scrum half Megan Johnson (Olympia, Washington) and punched in the score from about five yards out. Junior Madison Gegeckas (Dowington, Pennsylvania) brought the QU lead to 7-0 with a successful conversion kick.
After the Quinnipiac score, both teams were unable to get much offense going past midfield until freshman Emily Roskopf (Pleasanton, California) picked up the ball and ran for a huge run over twenty yards. Roskopf made a beautiful pass to a teammate, but she was unable to handle the ball and Life was able to gain possession.
With about 11 minutes left in the half, the Bobcats captured their second try of the game to take a 12-0 advantage. Running down the field and closing in on the goal line, Myles made a perfect dish to her left to find a streaking Maher for the score. The try was Maher's sixth of the season while Myles recorded her sixth assist of the year.
With the Bobcats threatening to score in the closing minutes before the break, Life kept themselves in the game with a couple huge defensive stands.
The Running Eagles found several great opportunities to cut down the Bobcat lead early in the second half but were unable to make the final push into the scoring zone. Just eight minutes into the frame, a Running Eagle ran about 30 yards deep into Bobcats territory. Quinnipiac's back line held strong, stealing the possession back and keeping Life from their first score.
Just eight minutes later, Life found themselves deep in Quinnipiac territory threatening from about two yards out. The Bobcats took possession after the Running Eagles were called for a knock-on. Life tipped the ball forward and QU was rewarded with the scrum.
Myles gave Quinnipiac a 19-0 lead with 12 minutes left in the game. Senior Jennifer Fremd (Oak Harbor, Washington) found Myles in space and the fly half took it in for her fifth try of the season. Gegeckas finished the day 2-for-3 from the conversion mark after finding the uprights on her third attempt.
Life University was able to finally breakthrough for a try with just five minutes left in regulation. Darian Lovelace scored on a tap and go from two yards out to bring the final to 19-5.
The Bobcats are back in action next weekend when they travel to Rhode Island to take on the Brown University Bears. On Saturday, October 10, Quinnipiac will meet the Bears at 11 a.m. from Marvel Field.
