Bobcats Claim Meet Victory for 11th Straight Season
LAWRENCEVILLE, New Jersey – The Quinnipiac women's cross country showcased their superior depth once again on Saturday as the Bobcats captured the Rider Invitational victory. In what has now become a fixture within the women's cross country program, Quinnipiac's depth was on full display in Saturday's meet as three Bobcats placed in the Top 10 overall while seven finished in the Top 25. For the day, Quinnipiac totaled 49 points which was 18 points ahead of the second place finishers Marist (67) and Monmouth (67).
The women ran great today," said Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin. "The girls all packed up really well and executed our plan perfectly. The team has grown and will continue to grow as the season moves along. We're all really excited for the meets to come and eventually challenging for a MAAC title."
In what was a key meet for the Bobcats in their 2015 schedule, Saturday's race was run on the same course (Rosedale Park) in which the MAAC Championship will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31. Their first run at the Rosedale Park course certainly was a significant one as the Bobcats dominated the competition on the scoreboard, marking the 11th straight season in which Quinnipiac has won an event.
Quinnipiac's contingent was led once again by junior Niamh Ashe (East Islip, New York), who dominated once again in placing 4th overall and first on the team. This two-time All-MAAC runner continued her incredible streak on Saturday, as she has placed first on the team in all 12 events in which she has competed for the Bobcats in her collegiate career. At the Rosedale Park, course, Ashe was the fastest non-senior runner and earned her fourth Top 5 and sixth Top 10 as she finished the meet in 22:02.2.
Also kicking off her season with a strong debut on Saturday was sophomore Emily Wolff (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) who joined Ashe in the Top 10 with a 7th place finish. Running for the first time in 2015, Wolff shined with her third career Top 10 finish while also placing as the second-fastest underclassmen on the afternoon. Wolff finished her seventh career appearance for the Bobcats in 22:36.7
In what should be considered no surprise to the Bobcat faithful, Wolff's classmate Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Connecticut) placed right behind Wolff in 9th place overall. Roberts adds another Top 10 finish to her career as the All-MAAC runner in 2014 finished with a time of 22:41.0. The pairing of Roberts and Wolff continue to impress as the duo have finished no worse than seven spots apart in the overall standings in all seven of their appearances together since 2014.
The Bobcats' upperclassmen unit followed the sophomore duo as senior Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, New Jersey) crossed the line in 13th place overall. Campbell just missed her fifth career Top 10 finish but still managed a strong showing with a time of 22:49.7.
The steady streak of Quinnipiac runners continued with junior Cameron Chaplen (Thomaston, Connecticut) as she crossed the line in 16th place. Chaplen's time of 22:54.3 continued a run of Bobcats as Wolff, Roberts, Campbell and Chaplen all finished within 18 seconds of one another.
Rounding out Quinnipiac's contingent was freshman Kaitlyn Hebert (Glastonbury, Connecticut) and senior Ashley Carle (Jackson, New Jersey). Hebert picked up a 20th place finish with a time of 23:04.0 while Carle clocked in at 23:20.3 to place 25th overall.
The Rider Invitational featured eight of the 11 MAAC teams as Quinnipiac looks to dethrone Iona and prevent the Gaels from recording an 11th straight conference title.
Quinnipiac will next compete in two weeks as the Bobcats head down to Lehigh University for the Paul Short Run on Friday, Oct. 2.
