BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania – The Quinnipiac women's cross country team set a new program record for the best team finish at the 42nd annual Paul Short Invitational, placing 10th overall out of 35 teams on Friday afternoon in the storied event from the campus of Lehigh University.
Just one year removed from placing 23rd overall out of 38 teams in the same event, Quinnipiac improved drastically with a 13-spot bump in 2015 including another program record four Bobcats placing in the Top 100 in the crowded field that included 313 runners.
"I'm really pleased with how we did today," said Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin. "Niamh (Ashe) and Emily (Wolff) ran phenomenally well. I felt out girls did a great job racing well in a crowded meet. We could have packed up better and we have some things we can improve upon but we ended up with a really good meet."
Quinnipiac's record-setting day was led by what can be considered one of the best performances in the three-year career of junior Niamh Ashe (East Islip, New York). In her third year competing at the Paul Short Invitational, Ashe crossed the line in 24th place which bests her previous career-high 35th place result at a Paul Short meet. Ashe steamrolled through Lehigh's sloppy Goodman Campus Course and finished with another career-high time of 21:11 in a Paul Short event. Ashe's streak also remained intact as she has finished as the fastest Bobcat in all 13 of her career appearances in a Quinnipiac uniform.
Even with the impressive showing from Ashe, Quinnipiac would not have seen the program records fall on the day if not for the effort seen from the sophomore tandem of Emily Wolff (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) and Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Connecticut). In just their second year as Bobcats, the pairing placed 37th and 71st, respectively.
Wolff showed the most improvement of any Bobcat on the team as she improved a team-high 101 spots in the overall standings from her 138th place finish at the 2014 Paul Short Invitational. Her time of 21:24 on Friday also goes down as a biggest improvement in time from last season as she crossed the line in 22:04 in 2014, a 40-second jump for this season's result.
Roberts' 71st place finish was also another massive jump-up from her 2014 Paul Short Invitational result that had her placing 137th overall. The 68-spot improvement had her clocking in at 21:48 on Friday while she improved her streak to eight straight career appearances finishing no worse than fourth on the team. Wolff and Roberts also continued their tandem streak wherein the two have finished back-to-back in all eight appearances they've made together throughout their two-year careers.
Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, New Jersey), certainly no stranger to the Goodman Campus Course, finished with a 88th place result to round out the four Bobcats placing in the Top 100. Campbell's fourth career appearance in the Paul Short Invitational goes down as her best yet as she improved her finishing result in each of her four appearances. Campbell crossed the line in 21:55 on Friday.
The traditionally superior depth for the Quinnipiac program continued on the afternoon as Kaitlyn Hebert (Glastonbury, Connecticut) tallied a 148th place finish out of the field of 313 runners. Hebert led the second pack of Quinnipiac runners and crossed the line in 22:25.
Following Hebert in the second pack was Ashley Carle (Jackson, New Jersey) and Cameron Chaplen (Thomaston, Connecticut). Carle picked up her best finish at a Paul Short Invitational meet as she placed 158th overall with a time of 22:30. Chaplen rounded out the Bobcats' scoring on the day with a 191st place finish and time of 22:44.
Quinnipiac returns to action with another crowded field as the Bobcats head to Franklin Park in Boston for the 2015 New England Championships on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 11 AM.
