Emily Roskopf Scores Three Tries as QU Women's Rugby defeats Dartmouth, 43-5

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's rugby team picked up a big 43-5 victory in their home opener Saturday afternoon behind Emily Roskopf's (Pleasanton, California) three tries at the QU Rugby Field.
Roskopf's three tries to give her eight through her first three games of the season. Roskopf also leads the team with 40 points of those eight tries. She also picked up her first career assist for the Bobcats late in the second half.
Maggie Myles (Emmitsburg, Maryland) finished the day with a try and an assist for the Bobcats while Karee Helgerson (Portland, Oregon) and Flora Poole (Christchurch, New Zealand) recorded their first career tries.
Ilona Maher (Burlington, Vermont) recorded two assists for the Bobcats in the victory and Margaret Wesolowski (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) and Megan Johnson (Olympia, Washington) each recorded one assist.
Madison Gegeckas (Dowington, Pennsylvania) was 4 for 7 on conversion attempts on the afternoon.
Quinnipiac (2-1, 0-1 NCVWRA) controlled the flow of the game after giving up an early 5-0 lead to Dartmouth (1-1, 1-0 Ivy). Yeja Dunn was tackled near the in-goal area but managed to lateral it back to Lilie Zhang who carried the ball in for a try with 27 minutes remaining in the first half.
Just under 10 minutes later, the Bobcats took the lead for good as Roskopf scored her first try of the game. Off a restart, Johnson tapped the ball to get play going before sending the ball to her right to Myles who found newcomer Tesni Phillips with a pass. Phillips passed the ball off to Maher where she found Roskopf to take it in for the try.
Gegeckas nailed home the conversion to give the Bobcats a 7-5 lead.
As the game approached half time, Myles kicked the ball down field to help with field positioning. When the ball hit the ground, it took a strange bounce right to Roskopf who took off from midfield with a 50-yard run for a try. After a Gegeckas conversion, the Bobcats took a 14-5 lead heading into halftime.
Quinnipiac turned up the pressure in the second half even more, as they increased their lead to 19-5 nearly 10 minutes into the second half. Johnson carried the ball up the offensive side of the field before dishing it off to Myles where she was tackled as she cross the try line.
Five minutes later, the Bobcats took a 24-5 lead off Roskopf's third try of the game. Maher punched the ball up the middle to widen the field. After the ball was fed out of the ruck to Myles she passed it off to Roskopf on her right. Roskopf faked a pass to the outside and cut back to the middle for the try.
Roskopf switched roles for the next Bobcat try as Quinnipiac took a 29-5 lead after she fed the ball from the middle to Maher who found the in-goal area for her fourth try of the season.
With 12 minutes to play, the Bobcats kept piling on the points as Helgerson's first career try gave the Bobcats a 36-5 lead. Helgerson scored her try unassisted by punching through the Dartmouth defense. Gegeckas nailed home her third conversion of the day for the Bobcats after the try.
After Dartmouth missed a penalty kick, the Bobcats scored their final try of the game with only 2:30 remaining game as Poole tallied her first career try, as well. After receiving as a feed from Wesolowski, Poole sprinted to the in-goal area from 30 yards out for the try. Gegeckas recorded her fourth and final conversion of the day to put the game away, 43-5.
The Quinnipiac women's rugby team returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 26 at 12 P.M. as they face conference rival Norwich University at the NU Dog River Rugby Pitch in Northfield, Vermont.
