QU Field Hockey Dealt 4-1 Loss By Maine; King Breaks Defensive Saves Record

HAMDEN, Connecticut - The Quinnipiac University field hockey team lost to Maine, 4-1, in a non-conference match-up at the Quinnpiac Field Hockey Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn. The loss drops Quinnipiac to 1-6 on the season while Maine improves to 6-1.
Quinnipiac junior Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut) recorded a program single-game record three defensive saves in the loss. The current NCAA Division I leader, King also broke Cate Colucci's single-season and career defensive save records, as with nine to date and 14 for her time at Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac trailed early as Maine's Marissa Shaw scored on a pass from Ella Mosky to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the game. A defensive back-and-forth ensued over the net 27 minutes before Michelle Federico (Cheshire, Connecticut) took control of the ball just over the midfield line and took off towards Maine's goal. After she was tied up just above the circle, Federico spied Meghan McCullough (Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania) spun to her left and blasted a pass to the far post where McCullough was waiting for the one-timer to tie the game at 1-1.
Coming out of the half, both teams went back and forth before Maine's Samantha Wagg scored off a corner when she blasted a shot past Quinnipiac goalie Megan Conaboy (Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania) to give the Black Bears a one-goal lead, 2-1.
On back-to-back possessions just moments later, King was able to stop Wagg's next blast off a corner for her first defensive save of the game with 20 minutes to play. Five minutes later, Conaboy pounced on and smothered a shot by Danielle Aviani before King stopped Cassidy Svetek on back-to-back players for give her her eighth and ninth defensive saves of the day.
In the closing minutes, it was Aviani setting up Jessica Skillings to give Maine a 3-1 lead before she scored on a pass from Libby Riedl to push the Black Bears lead to 4-1.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 22 when it hosts Holy Cross at 3:30 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Turf Complex in Hamden,
Connecticut.
