ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Quinnipiac women's rugby team hits the road for its second game of the 2015-16 season where the Bobcats will face the Army West Point Black Knights on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 12 P.M. at the Anderson Rugby Complex in West Point, New York.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Quinnipiac and Army West Point have faced off three times in the last two seasons with the Bobcats owning the all-time series, 2-1, including a 46-17 victory over the Black Knights in the Sweet 16 of the ACRA Tournament. The Bobcats have outscored the Black Knights 135-61 in their three meetings.
SCOUTING THE BLACK KNIGHTS
Army West Point returns to the Anderson Rugby Complex for their 2015 home opener fresh off a 29-6 victory on the road at American International College on Saturday, Sept. 5. Becca Stipp led the Black Knights with a pair of trys against the Yellow Jackets while Ari Efaw recorded a try as well as a pair of conversions. Hannah Whisnant and Lindy Clark also scored trys for the Black Knights. The Army West Point women's rugby team won the 2015 ACRA 7s National Championship over rival Norwich University.
Army returns Carissa Pekny and Allie McDonald, two of their top four scorers from the 15s season in 2014 as well as Nicole Heavirland, who was dominant in Army West Point's run to the ACRA 7s National Championship. Captains Mariah Caid-Loos and Chioma Odocha also return to the roster.
ALL-AMERICANS
Quinnipiac women's rugby's Natalie Kosko and former player Shannon Durkin were each named to the 2014-15 USA Rugby Women's Collegiate All-America Team. Kosko and Durkin led the Bobcats in nearly every statistical category on their way to a third place finish at the 2014 ACRA National Tournament in December.
A GREAT START
The Bobcats opened up the 2015 season with an impressive 41-10 victory over The College of Notre Dame (Ohio) on Tuesday, Sept. 1. It marked the fourth straight season in which the Bobcats recorded a victory in the season opener.
HOME OPENER ADVANTAGE
In each of the Quinnipiac women's rugby team's first four seasons, the Bobcats have won their home opener at Alumni Field. All-time at Alumni Field, the Bobcats are 13-4-1, including an impressive 6-2 in the last two seasons.
WELCOME TO THE Q
Ilona Maher (Burlington, Vermont) made an impressive mark for the Bobcats in her first game since transferring from Norwich University. Maher scored three trys and also picked up three assists to lead the Bobcats on the offensive end. She assisted the first try of the season before scoring her first on the second Bobcats tally.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Another new Bobcat led the team in the season opener as freshman Emily Roskopf (Pleasanton, California) tied Maher for the team lead in trys with three of her own. An outside center for the Bobcats, Roskopf was named to the inaugural Girls High School All-American team by USA Rugby that competed in the Las Vegas Invitational in January during her senior season.
SHUTTING DOWN THE OPPOSITION
Quinnipiac women's rugby was impressive on the defensive side of the game against The College of Notre Dame as they allowed just one try in each half on their way to the 41-10 win. Individual, Jessica Maricich (Lansing, Illinois) was dominant, totaling nine solo tackles in the match. Tayler Schussler (Westminster, Maryland) was right behind Maricich with eight tackles while Megan Johnson (Olympia, Washington) and Maggie Myles (Emmitsburg, Maryland) each recorded six tackles. Last season, Myles led all Quinnipiac women's rugby players with 64 solo tackles and was tied for fourth on the team with 12 assisted tackles.
NEW FOUNDATIONS
This season marks a new conference for the Quinnipiac women's rugby team as they are one of eight programs to be founding members of the National Collegiate Varsity Women's Rugby Association (NCVWRA). Quinnipiac joins Army West Point, Bowdoin, Brown, Central Washington, Harvard, Norwich and West Chester as founding members. The conference is focused on growing the sport of women's rugby and is open to all NCAA schools at any level that sponsor women's rugby at the varsity level.
LOOKING AHEAD
Following Quinnipiac women's rugby's match at Army West Point, the Bobcats will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 19 where they will face the Dartmouth Big Green at Alumni Field with the match scheduled to begin at 12 P.M.
