Federico Has Goal, Assist; King Has Two Defensive Saves, Assist In Loss
NEW YORK, New York – The Quinnipiac University field hockey team lost to Michigan State, 3-2, in a non-conference game played at Columbia University's Columbia Field Hockey Stadium in New York, New York. The Bobcats drop to 1-4 on the year while Michigan State improves to 3-2 on the year.
Quinnipiac sophomore Michelle Federico (Cheshire, Connecticut) had a goal and an assist for the Bobcats while Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut) had an assist and two defensive saves. King has now recorded a defensive save in four straight games while her five stops in the Bobcats first five games match her 2014 total. Quinnipiac freshman Selena Reichert (Lower Hutt, New Zealand) scored her first career goal off a pass from Federico.
Michigan State grabbed an early lead when Heather Howie took control of a rebound off a penalty stroke that was stopped by Bobcats' goalie Megan Conaboy (Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania). Howie handled the ball and dished to her left to Kendal Anderson who deposited her first goal of the season to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead just under seven minutes into the first half.
Reichert scored her first career goal off a pass from Federico who picked up her second point of the year. Federico took a pass on to the left of the Spartans' goal and centered a pass out in front of Michigan State keeper Sierra Patton. Reichert stepped in front of the pass and banged home the equalizer, tying the game at 1-1 halfway through the first frame.
With less than 10 minutes to play in the first half, Kristin Matula gave Michigan State a 2-1 lead with her second goal of the season. Matula cleaned up a loose ball in front of the Quinnipiac cage tipped it past Conaboy to give MSU a lead. Megan Fenton scored with just under two minutes to play in the first half when she found herself with a wide-open net after a sprawling save by Conaboy.
Coming out of the half, it was Conaboy again with two dramatic saves to keep it close. Michigan State applied pressure immediately coming out of the break with Mitula and Fenton both presenting scoring opportunities for the Spartans. Mitula shot from out in front of the cage but was denied with a kick-save by Conaboy. The ball caromed off of Conaboy's leg and over to Fenton on the opposite post. Her attempt to tuck her shot inside the near post was steered away by Conaboy on a diving stab.
King picked up her second defensive save of the game with 25 minutes to play in the second half, giving her five for the year to match her 2014 total. Her 10 career defensive saves also place her in the top five of active NCAA Division I field hockey student athletes.
Moments later, King made an incredible play when she intercepted a pass just over midfield and sent an outlet pass to Federico behind the MSU defense. Federico stick-handled around a Michigan State defender to the center of the circle and blasted a shot past the Spartans' goalkeeper to pull the Bobcats within a goal, 3-2, with 17 minutes to play in regulation.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 13 when it travels to Easton, Pennsylvania to take on Lafayette at 1 p.m. The Bobcats return home on Thursday, Sept. 17 to host Maine at 2 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Turf Complex in Hamden, Connecticut.
