Jersey City, New Jersey – The Quinnipiac University softball team swept a doubleheader against the St. Peter's Peacocks on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats began conference play with 13-4 and 12-4 victories in New Jersey. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 6-18 on the season while St. Peter's falls to 1-14.
In the first game, the Bobcats scored 13 runs off of 12 hits including eight runs in the final two innings. Quinnipiac was led by the top of the lineup as senior Nikki Barba (San Diego, California) and Brittney Cyr (Southington, Connecticut) combined to go 5-for-8 at the plate. Barba was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while Cyr finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
ECAC and MAAC player of the week Hannah Lindsley (Narragansett, Rhode Island) recorded the win for the Bobcats, pitching a complete game and allowing four runs off four hits and four walks. Lindsley tallied six strikeouts in her second win of the season while also going 1-for-3 at the plate with a three-run home run. She now leads the team with 17 RBI and five home runs on the year.
Quinnipiac trailed by one after the first, but scored four runs off four hits in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back hit batters put two runners on for the Bobcats and freshman Miranda Magana (Santa Paula, California) singled to center field to tie the game. A fielder's choice brought home the second runner and singles by Abby Johnson (Chelmsford, Massacusetts) and Barba scored two more runs for a 4-1 lead.
Saint Peter's cut the lead to one with three runs in the fifth, but Quinnipiac's offense caught fire in the final two innings. After Barba's second hit of the day, Cyr singled to give the Bobcats runners on first and second. Two consecutive errors then scored a run and loaded the bases for Emily Czaja (Palmer, Massachusetts) who singled home Lindsley to take a 9-4 advantage over the Peacocks. The pitcher's shot to center field brought the final score to 13-4 in the sixth inning.
In the second game, senior pitcher Sydney Robey (Northborough, Massachusetts) received the win, pitching 5.2 innings while giving up four earned runs off eight hits. The senior struck out one and walked six in her third win of the season. Junior catcher Dani Edmands (Glenmoore, Pennsylvania) led the offense with a 3-for-5 performance including two runs scored and two RBI.
Quinnipiac led the entire game, shutting out the opposition for the first five innings. The Bobcats jumped out to an early start when Magana singled home Barba in the bottom of the first. In the third inning, two back-to-back walks with bases loaded scored two more runs while a Robey single brought the score to 4-0.
After giving up four runs in the top of the sixth, Quinnipiac responded with five runs of their own in the bottom part of the inning. Freshman Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) started the scoring with a two run home run to center field. With bases loaded, Edmands connected for a two RBI double and a fielder's choice gave the Bobcats a final score of 12-4.
