Hamden, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University softball team fell to Sacred Heart on Wednesday afternoon, 6-0. With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 6-19 on the season while the Pioneers improve to 6-15. In what was a scoreless game through four innings, Quinnipiac was unable to string together much offense on the day.
Senior Hannah Lindsley (Narragansett, Rhode Island) started on the mound for the Bobcats and retired the first 12 batters of the game. Through four innings, the Pioneers could not touch Lindsley as she struck out four and did not let a runner reach base. Sacred Heart finally got to the senior pitcher in the fifth inning with four runs off five hits including a two run homer over the left field wall. After the home run, an error led to the final two runs of the inning and Lindsley left the game giving up four runs - two earned - over five innings.
Freshman Casey Herzog (Wappingers Falls, New York) came in to finish the game, pitching one inning and giving up two runs – one earned – off one hit and an error. Herzog hit the first batter and walked the second to put two runners on. The freshman struck out the third hitter but a passed ball advanced both runners into scoring position. A ground out and a single scored the final two runs of the game.
Quinnipiac reached base just three times against the Pioneer pitching. Second baseman Nikki Barba (Sand Diego, California) and left fielder Keilani Finley (Alameda, California) both went 1-for-3 from the plate. Finley singled to left field in the second and Barba reached first on a bunt single in the third. The left fielder also reached base in the top of the seventh after striking out and getting to first on a passed ball.
Up next, the Bobcats will travel to West Long Branch, New Jersey for a doubleheader with MAAC foe Monmouth on Saturday, April 4. The first game is slated to start at 1 p.m. followed by the second at 3 p.m. at the MU Softball Field. Quinnipiac is currently 2-0 in conference play after sweeping a double header with St. Peter's over the weekend.
