
QU Rugby Rolls Past West Chester 100-10

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Sophomore Ilona Maher (Burlington, Vt.) tied a school record with six assists, while also tallying 25 points and six runs over 20 yards, to lead the Quinnipiac Women's Rugby team to a 100-10 win over West Chester on Saturday afternoon in its regular season finale.
With the win, the Bobcats move to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the NCVWRA, heading into the conference tournament. Quinnipiac will host West Chester on Saturday in a rematch at QU Rugby Field in one of four quarterfinals at campus sites. The Golden Rams fall to 5-5 overall on the season with the loss.
Maher (pictured, photo by Donna Doherty) tallied six assists to tie the Quinnipiac school mark held by former inside center Elena Orlando, who set the record against Boston University in 2013 at the national tournament.
The Bobcats took control early behind a strong team effort. as five different players accounted for the first five tries. Freshman flank Autumn Martin (Riverside, Calif.) got Quinnipiac started when she scored off an assist from junior fly half Maggie Myles (Emmitsburg, Md.). Maher then picked up her first assist as she set up a try from freshman outside center Emily Roskopf (Pleasanton, Calif.)..
Myles, sophomore flank Flora Poole (Christchurch, New Zealand) and sophomore wing Rebecca Haight (Oconomowoc, Wis.) tallied the next three tries for the Bobcats, giving them five from five different players. Haight became the first Bobcat with two tries when she scored a second consecutive try to make the score 36-0, and after West Chester got on the board to cut the lead to 36-5, Maher earned her first one to make it six different players with the first seven Bobcat tries. Maher capped off the half with another try to make the score 62-10 at the break.
The Bobcats were able to stretch the final margin to 100-10 on two straight tries from freshman back Caitria Sands (Essex, Vt.) to close out the scoring, the first of which accounted for Maher's final assist. Junior scrum half Hailey Wyatt (Breckenridge, Colo.) added a second-half try for the Bobcats as well, giving Quinnipiac eight different players in the scoring column.
Poole ended up with two tries, four assists, one run over 20 and one steal at the tackle for Quinnipiac, which will face West Chester again next weekend at home in the quarterfinals. The winner will then move on to the semifinals at Brown on Friday, Nov. 20, with the championship slated for Sunday, Nov. 22.
