HAMDEN, Connecticut - Quinnipiac field hockey claimed a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship with a thrilling 5-4 overtime win against Fairfield in the Bobcats' final regular-season game of the year. Dayna Barlow (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) scored twice, including the game-winner in overtime, to lead the Bobcats.
Quininpiac and Monmouth will split the regular-season championship, with Monmouth claiming the No. 1 seed after winning the head-to-head match-up. Quinnipiac will be the No. 2 seed with Rider take the third seed and Fairfield claiming the fourth seed. The Bobcats' regular-season title is their second in three seasons in the MAAC after claiming a share of the inaugural championship in 2013.
Quinnipiac trailed by two goals twice in the game and stormed back to tie it both times, trailing 2-0 early in the first half and 4-2 late in the second. Barlow has now scored four goals in her last four games, including her second overtime game-winner in three games after topping Rider on Oct. 23. Meghan McCullough (Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania) had a goal and an assist while Felicia Costanzo (Lakeland, New York) and Angie King (South Windsor, Connecticut) also scored for the Bobcats. In goal, Megan Conaboy (Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania) recorded six saves.
Fairfield's Julie De Paeuw scored just under six minutes into the game before Ann Burgoyne scored her first of three goals in the game to give the Stags an early 2-0 lead eight minutes into the game. Midway through the first frame, Michelle Federico (Cheshire, Connecticut) carried the ball down the right wing, walked around defender just above the circle and blasted a ball through traffic to Barlow on the opposite post for the Bobcats' first goal of the game. Just under a minute later, McCullough picked up a rebound and punched it past Fairfield keeper Caitlin Bennett to tie the game at 2-2.
Burgoyne answered for Fairfiled, scoring with a minute left in the first half off a corner set, to give the Stags a one-goal lead, 3-2, heading into halftime. She gave Fairfield its second two-goal lead of the game at the 43:22 mark of play after working a give-and-go at the top of the circle with de Paeuw that finished with Burgoyne making a diving stab at a cross from her teammate and re-directing it past Conaboy.
Midway through the period, Costanzo scored her seventh goal of the year to cut Fairfield's lead in half after she cleaned up a loose ball in front of the Stags' cage. With less than three minutes to play in regulation Quinnipiac earned a corner. Megan Osanitsch (Harwinton, Connecticut) was denied on her bid from the left arc of the scoring circle before the Bobcats were granted another. Haley Swartz (Dowington, Pennsylvania) then fed the ball to McCullough at the top of the circle who stopped it for King who unleashed a blast on cage to knotted it at 4-4 and send the game to overtime.
In overtime, Quinnipiac was sent reeling when Swartz was hit with a Green card, giving Fairfield a man-advantage for two minutes. The Bobcats didn't need it as Osanitsch broke up a play in the Bobcats' defensive end and looked to the sideline for McCullough. McCullough sent the ball back to Osanitsch who looked up-field and found Barlow. Barlow weaved through wave after wave of Fairfield defenders before gliding the ball past Bennett for the short-handed goal.
Quinnipiac will travel to West Long Branch, New Jersey for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament at host Monmouth University. The second-seeded Bobcats will face third-seeded Rider on Friday, Nov. 6.
