PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Quinnipiac University women's soccer team dropped a non-conference match to Saint Joseph's University on Friday night, as the Bobcats suffered a 2-0 loss at Sweeney Field in Philly. The Hawks scored once in the first half and added a second one in the second half to secure the victory.
Saint Joseph's game-winning tally came just before the halftime whistle when the Hawks capitalized on a cross into the middle of the penalty area. The ball took a bounce that landed at the foot of Ramsey McMenamin who found the back of the net for the team's first goal. A sophomore from Maple Glen, Pa., McMenamin registered her first tally of the season on the play.
Saint Joseph's, who improved to 6-3 on the season with the win, ran its winning streak to five straight dating back to the first week in September. It marked the team's fifth straight 1-0 win, as the team looks to turn some heads in a deep and talented Atlantic 10 Conference.
Generating offense proved to be difficult for the Bobcats, who mustered five shots on the evening. Quinnipiac made opposing goalkeeper Allison Ebling work twice on the evening, as the Schuylkill Haven, Pa. native made both saves. Jessica Fontaine (Enfield, Conn.), last weekend's hero in the 1-0 victory over Vermont, challenged her with both shots in the game. The result gave Ebling her fifth shutout on the season.
Saint Joseph's second goal came very late in the game with just seconds remaining on the clock. Olivia McEachern slipped one past Bobcat keeper Natalia Grodzki (Bartlett, Ill.) to seal the deal from Sweeney Field. Emily Gingrich, the Hawks leading scorer thus far, set up the goal with her first assist of the season.
Grodzki, who posted her first clean sheet of the season last weekend, made a season-high seven saves on the night. She fell to 1-4 on the year.
Quinnipiac and Saint Joseph's met last season, when the Hawks travelled to Hamden for the first meeting all-time between the two teams. Saint Joseph's erased a 2-0 deficit with three unanswered goals late in the game, which included the game-winning marker with just 4.3 seconds left in regulation.
With the majority of its non-conference schedule in the rearview mirror, Quinnipiac now turns to MAAC play next week. "We have had a tough run of games and the hope now is that the demanding schedule stands to us in the MAAC," said head coach Dave Clarke.
The Bobcats open their MAAC slate on Wednesday, Sept. 24 with a home game against Iona College. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at the QU Soccer Field on Mount Carmel Campus.
