HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac women's basketball senior forward Samantha Guastella (Red Bank, New Jersey) was named the College Sports Madness MAAC Player of the Week, as announced by the association's committee on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014. With the announcement, combined with Jasmine Martin's player of the week honor on Dec. 1 the Bobcats have picked up the last two College Sports Madness Player of the Weeks.
Guastella earns the award following a week in which she averaged 18 points per game with 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals. Highlighted by a career-high against Siena, Guastella flashed all of the offensive and defensive skills that helped lead her team to an undefeated 2-0 mark in MAAC play for the week.
In the Bobcats' MAAC opening victory over Siena, Guastella came up big with a career-high 28 points, matching a single-game Quinnipiac Div. I record with six made three pointers. In the 78-65 victory over the Saints, her five made three pointers in the first half also tied Quinnipiac's single-game first half record set by Felicia Barron on Jan. 22, 2011. She rounded out her day with five rebounds, five blocks, two assists and one steal. A force on both ends, Guastella totaled 12 blocks over her last two games to set a new Quinnipiac record.
Guastella rounded out her week with another great all-around game with eight points, five rebounds, two steals, one block and one assist in Quinnipiac's come-from-behind 67-66 road win at Fairfield. After being swept by the Stags in the 2013-14 season series and trailing throughout their meeting on Sunday, Guastella's big-time three-point make with 1:17 remaining gave the Bobcats their first lead of the game. Guastella's bucket in the waning minutes gave Quinnipiac a 65-62 lead, an advantage the Bobcats never relinquished, thus overcoming the raucous home crowd on Sunday for the Stags.
Up next for Quinnipiac is exam week as the student-athletes won't play again until Monday, Dec. 15 at home against Albany. Tip-off for the non-conference game from the TD Bank Sports Center is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
