HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University women's lacrosse team visited elementary-aged students at Helen Street School on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014 and joined in their Thanksgiving-themed activities for the day. The Bobcats visited the classrooms of Quinnipiac women's lacrosse alums Laura Iannotti '11 and Lexi DeStefano '11, who both team at the local school in Hamden.
"I'm very proud that we were able to visit both Laura and Lexi's classrooms," said head coach Danie Caro. "It's very positive for my current players to see the impact Laura and Lexi have as educators, and we're grateful that they both make time to include us in their classroom. My players gain as much from the experience as the children do, and it's really fun to see all of the kids, big and small, smiling as they work on their activities together."
Before the arts and crafts began, the Bobcats read a Thanksgiving theme story to the two classrooms. The children then took what they learned from the reading by the Bobcats and worked with the student-athletes to design their Thanksgiving placemats.
Members of the team worked with the students in small groups of two to color in their Thanksgiving turkeys, and once completed they attached a handwritten cutout with all the Thanksgiving themed facts learned in the reading. The players and students all worked together throughout the afternoon while DeStefano shared some pictures with her classroom from her time as a Bobcat playing for coach Caro.
"It's always such a rewarding experience to visit Helen Street School with my teammates," said sophomore Positive Play Leader Danielle La Rocco, who coordinated the visit to Helen Street School. "It gives us a chance to take a break from lacrosse and give back to our community. The children look up to us as role models and it is incredibly powerful for us to feel that."
The event was part of Quinnipiac's "Positive Play" program, which encourages community involvement by Quinnipiac's student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Always one of the University's leaders since adopting the Positive Play Initiative, the women's lacrosse team continues their commitment towards Athletic Department's development of service and civic engagement amongst their student-athletes.
Quinnipiac women's lacrosse just recently wrapped up their 2014 fall slate with a perfect 3-0 record and victory in the Connecticut Cup hosted by Yale University. Coach Caro recently announced her 2015 schedule with the Bobcats' season opener slated for Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the QU Lacrosse Turf Field against Albany (N.Y.).
