HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team held a two-day food drive last weekend as the Bobcats strengthen their commitment to the University's Positive Play Initiative designed to strengthen the bond between the local communities and the student-athlete population at Quinnipiac.
The entire 2014-15 roster helped play a role in the Bobcats' efforts which spanned over a two-day period from Oct. 24-25. The weekend started on Friday, Oct. 24 as the start of Parents Weekend as well as the annual Bobcat Madness celebration up at the TD Bank Sports Center helped pull in significant donations. More generous donations followed on Saturday, Oct. 25 as the team continued to collect goods during their fall home game against Manhattan. In all, the Bobcats delivered 316 pounds of food to the Connecticut Food Bank located in East Haven.
"I'm really proud of our team and support we received from the Quinnipiac community for the food drive," said Quinnipiac sophomore Danielle La Rocca. "We were able to donate 316 pounds of nonperishable food items to Connecticut families in need. It's a great feeling knowing we were able to do something to give back to our community."
Always one of the University's leaders since adopting the Positive Play Initiative, the women's lacrosse team continues their commitment towards Athletic Department's development of service and civic engagement amongst their student-athletes.
The Connecticut Food Bank, specifically, helps supply food all throughout the state. A private, nonprofit organization, the CT Food Bank works with corporations, community organizations and individuals to solicit, transport, warehouse and distribute donated food. Founded in 1982, CT Food Bank is the largest centralized source of donated, emergency food in Connecticut. Through five central warehouses across the state, the CT Food Bank provided food products to nearly 700 soup kitchens, shelters, food pantries and child and adult day programs all throughout Connecticut.
"The Connecticut Food Bank serves a vital role in our local community and I am very proud of my players for taking the initiative to hold a food drive to collect donations on their behalf," said head coach Danie Caro. "It's very important to foster a sense of responsibility for others in the community, and being able to make a difference locally is very gratifying."
Quinnipiac women's lacrosse just recently wrapped up their 2014 fall slate with a perfect 3-0 record and victory in the Connecticut Cup hosted by Yale University. Stay tuned to QuinnipiacBobcats.com for the 2015 schedule announcement set to be released next week.
