HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac Director of Athletics and Recreation Jack Macdonald and Softball head coach Germaine Fairchild have announced the hiring of Lynn Labbadia and Amy Vaughan as assistant coaches for the softball program. Labbaddia, a Quinnipiac College graduate of 1985 and former standout softball player, joins the softball staff after holding several assistant coaching positions at the middle and high school level. Vaughan, a 2012 UConn graduate and former standout herself, joins Quinnipiac after excelling over a four-year career with the Huskies.
Labbadia brings with her a wealth of playing experience to go along with years of work as a Physical Therapist specializing in the field of ACL injury prevention.
Labbadia has led a distinguished career in softball and it began in 1976 when she was the first girl named to a Little League Baseball All-Star Team (Connie Mack All-Stars). She helped lead the Orville H. Platt High School softball team to the 1981 Class L. State Championship, their first in school history. She pitched for four years, eclipsing 50 wins for her high school career, and received a scholarship to play softball for Quinnipiac College.
At Quinnipiac, Labbadia was a standout athlete beginning in her freshman year when she started in centerfield and finished with a .431 batting average, 5th highest among all Division II players. She was selected to the First-Team All-NECC Team twice in her career and helped lead Quinnipiac to an 87-45 record over her four years. For her outstanding achievements in the sports, Labbadia was named to the Quinnipiac Athletic Hall of Fame on May 14, 1992.
Labbadia has continued to work in softball, serving as an assistant coach in the Berlin Little League, Middle School, and High School teams. After her playing career at Quinnipiac came to an end, she became a student assistant softball coach for the 1986 season and after 26 years she makes a return appearance to coach the Bobcats once again.
She has served as a Physical Therapist for Gaylord Hospital from 1986-87 before becoming a Supervisor at Gaylord hospital for seven years. She currently serves as a Physical Therapist for the Berlin VNA (since 1995), Berlin school system (since 2009), and works for Triad Healthcare Inc. (since 2012). Labbadia currently lives with her husband in Berlin, Conn.
Vaughan brings a wealth of playing experience, as she played right field for four years at UConn. During her senior season in 2012, Vaughan clubbed 13 home runs to go along with 42 runs batted in, 46 hits, and 12 doubles to lead the team in all four categories. The 13 home runs gave her the single season home run record at UConn. She also played against the Bobcats several times throughout her career and finished 3-for-10 (.300 batting average), with four runs batted in, a run scored, one walk, and one hit-by-pitch in four games against Quinnipiac. Among her individual accolades, she was named a NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete all four years, received BIG EAST Third Team All-Star recognition in 2010, was team captain for the 2010-11 season and was named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team and CPIA Academic Honor Roll all four years. Her success in the classroom granted her being named the Outstanding Senior Scholar Athlete Award in 2012.
She held various leadership roles while being a student at UConn including being a Student Representative from the United States for the International Institute of Political and Economic Studies between July – Aug, 2011 in Crete, Greece. She worked with 99 other students from areas in Europe, Northern Africa and the Middle East on global political issues and engaged in a conflict resolution simulation during the gathering. She also worked as a camp counselor at the UConn Softball Camp from June 2009 up through this year. During the camp she worked as a team leader for 10-14 girls and taught them the basic skills of softball.
