The third-seeded Quinnipiac field hockey team (11-8, 5-2 NEC) lost to No. 2 Monmouth (15-5, 6-1 NEC), 1-0, in the first semifinal game of the 2011 Northeast Conference Tournament on Friday morning. The Bobcats end the season at 11-8 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
Monmouth took a 1-0 lead, less than two minutes into the second half. The Hawks' Patricia O'Dwyer scored the game-winning goal, her 15th goal of the season, off a rebound from a deflected shot by Michelle Pieczynski.
Despite the loss, Quinnipiac created solid chances, drawing four penalty corners in the first 10 minutes of play. The Bobcats' final corner of the half came with less than 30 seconds on the clock, but was unsuccessful.
After Monmouth took a 1-0 lead in the second half, Quinnipiac's goalkeeper Nicole Lewis (East Amherst, N.Y.) kept the Bobcats alive, making several pivotal saves. She would finish with 10 saves in the game. With 19 minutes to play, Bobcats' senior Lauren Zimniski (Dallas, Pa.) came close to tying the game when her shot was saved on the line by Monmouth defender Nicole Manziano.
With 14 minutes remaining in the game, the Hawks attempted to increase their advantage on an Alex Carroll shot that hit the post. Monmouth continued to play in Quinnipiac's defensive zone as they took back-to-back penalty corners. The Bobcats' Lewis made several brilliant saves to keep Quinnipiac within a goal.
Quinnipiac's Amanda Danziger (Smithtown, N.Y.) had two opportunities late in the game on a pair of shots-on-goal with less than four minutes to play before Quinnipiac was awarded two penalty corners. Bobcats' senior Kim Cunniff's (Walpole, Mass.) shot on the second penalty corner was saved on the play. Monmouth held the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the game.
