HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University women's ice hockey team suffered its first ECAC Hockey defeat against #2 Cornell University, 5-1, on Friday night at the TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats overall record now stands at 5-2-1, while its conference record is now 0-1. Cornell improves its overall record to 3-0-0 on the season, while it begins conference play with a 1-0 record.

Quinnipiac scored the first goal of the contest at the 16:08 mark of the first period on junior forward Kate Wheeler's (Oakville, Ontario) sixth goal of the year. Wheeler received a centering pass from freshman forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario), who earned her team-leading 13^th assist on the play. Freshman forward Erica Uden Johansson (Sundsvall, Sweden) was also credited with her fifth assist of the year on the tally.

Cornell responded just over a minute later at the 17:44 mark of the first period on a five on three power-play advantage to tie the game, 1-1. Junior forward Rebecca Johnston tallied her second goal of the year, as junior forward Chelsea Karpenko and freshman forward Brianne Jenner each were credited with her second assist of the season.

The Big Red capitalized on its second power-play goal of the evening at the 18:52 mark of the first period to take the lead, 2-1. Sophomore defender Laura Fortino was assisted by senior forward Amber Overguard and Jenner on the score.

Cornell netted a goal early in the second period at the 6:09 mark to extend its lead to 3-1. Freshman forward Jessica Campbell potted her first of two goals on the evening, coming on assists from Johnston and Jenner.

Karpenko kept the momentum rolling for the Big Red, scoring her second goal of the year at the 16:08 mark to bring the score to 4-1. Junior skater Amanda Young picked up her third assist on the play.

Cornell's final goal of the evening came at the 14:26 mark as Campbell registered her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Young and Overguard were each awarded an assist on the tally.

Sophomore goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) stopped a season-high 39 shots in the defeat, while her counterpart, junior netminder Amanda Mazzotta, made 24 saves on the evening.

Quinnipiac returns to action tomorrow night on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. when it hosts conference opponent Colgate University.
