WEST WINDSOR, N.J. The second-seeded Quinnipiac men's tennis team will try to recapture the Northeast Conference Championship tomorrow afternoon against top-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson after a pair of victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals, Friday and Saturday. The Bobcats defeated No. 7 Saint Francis (Pa.), Friday, and No. 3 Monmouth, Saturday. Both matches were won by a 4-0 margin. Sunday's final will begin at noon at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.
With the win, the Bobcats avenge a semifinal loss to Monmouth in 2007 by taking care of the Hawks in the same round this season. The final team in their way is the Knights, who took the NEC crown last season. Coming into the 2007 Championships, the Bobcats had won three consecutive titles. The Bobcats and Knights met to decide the 2006 NEC Championship, with Quinnipiac taking the title.
John Hughes (Springfield, Mass.), Tom Curran (Fairfield, Conn.) and Joe Nuara (Little Silver, N.J.) each won three matches in the two days. Hughes won both his No. 1 singles matches and paired with Scott Salway to earn a No. 2 doubles decision against Monmouth. Curran and Nuara twice paired to win at No. 3 doubles, while each took a singles win, at No. 5 and 6, respectively, against Saint Francis. Brian Mikkelson (Mequon, Wis.) and Sean Pease (Falmouth, Mass.) also won twice each.
