HAMDEN, Conn. Tiffany Manzi (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and Hannah Nelson (Glastonbury, Conn.) were honored this week by the Northeast Conference with weekly awards. Manzi was named the NEC Player of the Week, while Nelson was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. This is the second time that both players have won an award this season, but the first that any member of the Bobcats has been named Player of the Week. Both players made huge contributions in helping the Bobcats secure at least a share of their first-ever NEC regular season title.
Manzi was tabbed as the NEC Player of the Week for her strong performances in the three conference games this past week. Manzi led the Bobcats to first place in the NEC on the strength of 10 goals, including four against Mount St. Mary's on Sunday afternoon in Emmitsburg, Md. She also had one assist, five ground balls, seven draw controls and four caused turnovers in the Bobcats' perfect week. Her three goals against Sacred Heart on Friday afternoon helped spark a second half comeback that allowed Quinnipiac to defeat the previously unbeaten Pioneers, 10-9. Earlier in the season Manzi was named Defensive Player of the Week, but this was the first time this season she was recognized as the conference's top player of the week.
Nelson joins Manzi on the NEC's weekly honor roll. She was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season by helping the Bobcats defeat all three conference opponents in a five-day stretch. Nelson earned the honor as she made 24 saves in the three wins this past week, including three huge saves late in the game to preserve the victory over the Pioneers on Friday afternoon. Continuing to build on her team lead in ground balls, Nelson picked up seven this week, including a game-high four at Mount St. Mary's on Sunday. Nelson currently leads all goalkeepers in goals-against average and save percentage this season. Her 8.49 goals-against figure is almost a full goal better than any other goalkeeper's in the NEC. In just her second season, Nelson is second in career wins by a Quinnipiac goalkeeper with 16.
The Bobcats wrap-up their regular season seeking their first-ever 10 win season on Sunday as they host the Colgate Red Raiders on Senior Day. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
