Women's Basketball Falls To St. Francis (N.Y.), 63-60

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University women's basketball team saw their 15-game home win streak come to an end as the Bobcats fell to St. Francis (N.Y.), 63-60, at Burt Kahn Court in Hamden, Conn. Quinnipac drops to 10-6 overall and 4-3 in the Northeast Conference while St. Francis improves to 7-12 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 22-14 lead led by an eight-point effort from Kerner. The Bobcats dominated on the boards early with Monique Lee (Lynn, Mass.) and Hannalee Pervan (Uxbridge, Ontario) pulling down five rebounds apiece. St. Francis would use a 12-4 run to take their first lead of the half, 26-24, with just under five minutes to play in the first frame.
St. Francis would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the half behind a 17-point explosion from the Terriers' Kara Ayers. Ayers was perfect in the first half, hitting on 6-of-6 from the floor including both attempts from 3-point range. Katja Bavendam chipped in with eight points. St. Francis led, 30-29, at halftime.
For Quinnipiac, Kerner totaled eight points in the first half while Lee and Briana Rooney (Guilford, Conn.) each chipped in with six points apiece. Quinnipiac shot just 36.7 percent from the floor, hitting on 11-of-30. St. Francis would hit on 11-of-23 for 47.8 percent for the first half.
Quinnipiac would hold St. Francis scoreless over the first five minutes of the second half to take a 36-30 lead before the Terriers scored four unanswered points to cut the Bobcats' lead to 36-34 with 14:12 to play.
Kerner led the Quinnipiac charge to start the half, netting 14 of QU's 20 points over the first 12 minutes of the second half. Quinnipiac led, 51-48, with just over six minutes remaining in the half. St. Francis would use a 7-0 run to take a 55-51 lead with just over four minutes in the game on a 3-pointer from Linda Warrington, and pair of lay-ups by Tiffany Hill and Bavendam.
Quinnipiac answered with a 6-2 run to tie the game at 57-57 with just under two minutes to play. Lee would account for four points in the run while Courtney Kaminski (Dudley, Mass.) hit a jumper from just inside the 3-point line. Following a lay-up and a missed foul shot by Bavendam to put St. Francis on top, 59-57, Kerner quickly turned the missed free throw into a lay-up on the other end by Mandy Pennewell (West Chester, Pa.). Pennewell's free throw would put Quinnipiac ahead, 60-59, with 1:21 on the clock.
Warrington would score on a backdoor cut to the basket to put St. Francis back on top, 61-60. Kerner would miss on the ensuing possession, but the Bobcats would force a St. Francis turnover with the Terriers leading by one with 20.9 seconds remaining in the game. Kerner would be forced into an off-balanced jumper from 15-feet out, resulting in a Bavendam rebound and a quick foul by Lee. Bavendam would convert on both free throw attempts to put the Terriers on top for good, 63-60.
Kerner would finish with a game-high 22points and five assists while Lee tallied 14 points and eight rebounds. Kaminski dropped in 10 points off the bench.
For St. Francis, Bavendam scored 22 points, 14 in the second half, and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Ayers would total 17 points and Warrington finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
As a team, St. Francis shot 54.5 percent (24-44) from the floor while Quinnipiac shot 39 percent (23-59).
Quinnipiac returns to action on Wednesday, January 24 when they host Central Connecticut State University at 7 p.m. at Burt Kahn Court in Hamden, Conn. The game will mark the final basketball game at Burt Kahn Court before the Bobcats move into the brand new, state-of-the-art TD Banknorth Sports Center on Saturday, January 27 when they host Long Island University at 3:30 p.m.
