Colleen Doherty enters her fifth season as an assistant coach with the Quinnipiac women’s rugby team in 2018-19, after coaching the Bobcats to three consecutive NIRA National Championships (2015, 2016 and 2017). Doherty diligently works with the attack and defensive structure of the backline that included 4 members who earned NIRA All-American honors during the 2017-18 season. In the 2016-17 season the Bobcats posted an impressive record of 11-1 and a point differential of 756-156 with the backline contributing to over 70% of all team points.
In addition to her time spent at Quinnipiac, Doherty also serves on the board of the New Haven Rugby Football Club. She serves as both the women's 15s Associate Head Coach and the women's 7s Head Coach. Under Doherty's leadership the New Haven women's Rugby 7s program successfully captured the title of Empire 7s Series Champions in their first year of competing at this competitive level.
Doherty is a member of the Alliance of Women Coaches, a graduate of the NCAA Women Coaches Academy Class 41 and a pioneer in the inaugural NCAA Women’s Coaches Mentor Program.Doherty graduated from Quinnipiac in 2014 with a degree in athletic training and served as a volunteer coach with the Bobcats after graduation. At Quinnipiac, Doherty was a stand-out member of the inaugural rugby team in the spring of 2011. She became a four-year captain and starter and earned Most Valuable Player honors for the 2012-2013 season where she led the team in assists and posted thirty tackles and four tries. In this season the Bobcats were the Tri-State Conference Champions and received a bid to the national tournament in Stanford, California. In the national tournament Doherty helped lead her team to a third place finish against the University of Buffalo after their only loss of the season in semi-finals to Winona State. In addition, Doherty was awarded the Bobcat Award each year she was on the team for the passion and pride she showed for the sport.
