Bobcats Take on Siena in Hamden on Friday

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's tennis is preparing to host Siena on Friday afternoon in Hamden, Conn. on Mount Carmel Campus.

The Bobcats enter the match undefeated in MAAC play at 4-0 while posting a 6-11 overall record. Siena enters the match 3-10 overall and 2-1 in MAAC play. QU is 18-2 versus Siena since 2000.

VELEK TABBED FOR TWO MAAC AWARDS

Graduate student Daniel Velek was tabbed for two MAAC awards on Wednesday afternoon, first being named Male Student-Athlete of the Week as well as MAAC Tennis Player of the Week.
He earned MAAC Tennis Player of the Week after going 3-1 between No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles, teaming up with James Lorenzetti.
In singles he defeated Merrimack's Gradski 6-4, 6-4 and Rider's Tangri, 6-2, 6-2. Velek and Lorenzetti's lone doubles win was 6-1 over Martinez and Thurgur of Rider.

MAAC WEEKEND SWEEP

QU defeated both Merrimack and Rider this past weekend to move to 4-0 in the MAAC.
The Bobcats defeated Merrimack 5-2 on singles wins from Daniel Velek, Carlos Braun Simo, Elias Hoxha, James Lorenzetti, and Alex Yang.
They topped Rider 4-3 on Sunday, getting singles wins from Daniel Velek, Finn Burridge, Elias Hoxha, and Alex Yang in straight sets.
Elias Hoxha and Alex Yang moved to 4-0 in MAAC singles play.

OUTDOOR WEEKEND SWEEP

Last weekend the Bobcats played their first outdoor matches, first traveling to play Marist, winning 5-2 to move 2-0 in the MAAC.
They then defeated LIU at home 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.
Alex Yang is currently on a three-match winning streak while James Lorenzetti and Daniel Velek have won their last four doubles matches.

BOBCATS GET SECOND WIN OF SEASON OVER COLGATE

The tandems of Finn Burridge / Carlos Braun Simo and Daniel Velek / James Lorenzetti each won their second consecutive doubles matches to clinch the doubles point for QU.
While Velek, Braun Simo, Elias Hoxha, and Alex Yang each won their singles matches as well.

LOSS AT ARMY

The doubles tandems of Finn Burridge and Carlos Braun Simo and Daniel Velek and James Lorenzetti each won their doubles matches to secure the doubles point for the Bobcats.
Though, Lorenzetti was the lone Bobcat to go 2-0 on the day, winning his No. 5 singles match.

FIRST MAAC WIN OVER NIAGARA

Despite dropping the doubles point, Finn Burridge, Carlos Braun Simo, Elias Hoxha, and Alex Yang each won their singles matches to secure a 1-0 start in MAAC play.

HOME LOSS TO BRYANT

James Lorenzetti and Elias Hoxha each won their matches in third set tiebreakers against Bryant.

TOUGH LOSS TO MONMOUTH

QU fell 4-1 to Monmouth at home last weekend, with their lone point coming in doubles.
The tandems of Elias Hoxha / Finn Burridge and Carlos Braun Simo / Alex Yang each won their doubles matches.
Four of six singles matches went three sets but it wouldn't be enough for the Bobcats.

IVY LEAGUE LOSSES

The Bobcats have fallen in each Ivy League matchup this season, getting swept by Brown, UPenn, and Harvard and losing 6-1 at Cornell and Dartmouth.
Alex Yang was the lone winner at Cornell, taking his first win as a Bobcat in straight sets.
Csanad Nyaradi won his No. 6 singled match at Dartmouth in straight sets.

LOSS AT ST. JOHN'S

Despite Daniel Velek and James Lorenzetti taking their match at No. 1 doubles, the Bobcats dropped the doubles point with Elias Hoxha and Finn Burridge falling in a tiebreaker in their match at No. 2 doubles.
Prior to the Red Storm clinching the win, Daniel Velek and Finn Burridge were able to win the first sets of their matches.

LOSSES TO NJIT AND PENN STATE

James Lorenzetti was the lone winner for the Bobcats over the weekend, taking the first set in his match at Penn State before his opponent retired.
Elias Hoxha and Finn Burridge were able to win their No. 3 doubles match against NJIT but it wouldn't be enough to take the doubles point.

ITA REGIONALS

Daniel Velek reached the Round of 16 in the fall ITA Regionals hosted by Harvard.
Yasha Laskin and Carl Sjoholm also reached the round of 16 in doubles before falling to a pair from Siena.

MAAC MASTERS TOURNAMENT

Finn Burridge and Carlos Braun Simo battled into the semifinals of the MAAC Masters Tournament in Hamden, Conn. two weeks ago.
Both members of the duo also reached the quarterfinal round in the singles draw.

FAIRFIELD INVITE

QU won 19 matches over the course of the weekend in Fairfield.
Elias Hoxha finished the tournament with five straight wins.

BROWN INVITE

The Bobcats won 11 matches over the two days last weekend.
Finn Burridge and James Lorenzetti both won their matches against Yale while Carlos Braun Simo, Csanad Nyaradi, and Elias Hoxha won their matches against Brown.
Finn Burridge / Carlos Braun Simo and Yasha Laskin / Csanad Nyaradi teamed up to win doubles matches over Brown.
Donovan Brown won both of his matches against Merrimack, including teaming up with Carl Sjoholm to win a doubles match.
Csanad Nyaradi and Elias Hoxha each won two singles matches.

DEFENDING MAAC CHAMPS

Quinnipiac men's tennis took home its first MAAC Championship in program history.
They defeated Fairfield 4-2 on April 21, 2024 to gain their first NCAA berth since 2010.
It was the fifth conference championship for the Bobcats overall, winning four in the NEC.
QU went 14-11 overall and 5-1 in the MAAC.

ALL-MAAC SELECTIONS

Daniel Velek, the defending MAAC Player of the Year, is returning for his final year in Hamden.
Carlos Braun Simo was Quinnipiac's other first team singles selection, while Finn Burridge and Donovan Brown each made All-MAAC Second Team.
Daniel Velek was also a first team doubles selection while Donovan Brown received a second team nod.

STRONG RETURNING GROUP

The defending MAAC champs return six of eight players from season ago.
Carlos Braun Simo, Donovan Brown, Finn Burridge, Yasha Laskin, Gaurav Mootha, Csanad Nyaradi, and Daniel Velek all return for the Bobcats.

THE NEWCOMERS

The Bobcats welcome four incoming First Years, Elias Hoxha, James Lorenzetti, Carl Sjoholm, Vishal Prakash.
They also welcome transfer Alex Yang from SMU.
