CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. — Graduate student Captain Kendall Cooper has been named the Wayne Dean Sportsmanship Award winner as announced at the team's banquet by the league on Wednesday, April 23.
The award, inaugurated in November 2022, is named in honor of the late Wayne Dean, the former Yale University Deputy Director of Athletics who played a significant role in the growth and success of ECAC Hockey and NCAA collegiate ice hockey. The award annually honors an ECAC Hockey student-athlete (men's or women's) who demonstrates the highest level of integrity and sportsmanship; displays the utmost respect for student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and officials, as well as the game/sport; and encourages all individuals to demonstrate good sportsmanship and ethical conduct inside and outside of the competition setting.
Quinnipiac Women's Ice Hockey head coach Cass Turner said about Cooper, "Kendall embodies everything this award stands for in honoring Wayne Dean. Her integrity, respect for the game, and unwavering commitment to sportsmanship set an example for everyone around her. Whether on the ice or off it, Kendall approaches each challenge with a level of grace and professionalism that reflects the values this award honors. She has not only excelled on the ice but has consistently uplifted her teammates and the sport with her leadership and character. We are incredibly proud of Kendall for earning this prestigious recognition and for being a true ambassador of the game."
Cooper has been a leader for the Bobcats on and off the ice the last five seasons in Hamden. She was named Team MVP the last two seasons while also being named Rookie of the Year in her first season in Hamden, immediately gaining recognition and respect from her teammates. She will finish her career in Hamden as one of the most decorated players in program history with five All-ECAC selections in five seasons.
