Bobcats Fall In Invitational Opener To George Mason

WILLIAMSBURG, V.A. – The Bobcats dropped the opening match of the William & Mary Invitational to George Mason, 3-1, on Friday afternoon in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Elena Giacomini led the team with 19 kills and Leilani-kai Giusta recorded a double-double (12 kills, 20 digs) for the second straight match.

SET ONE (25-19, George Mason)
The Patriots jumped out to the lead in the first set and saw themselves up 19-10 in the opening frame. The Bobcats responded with six of the next eight points to make it a 21-16 game in favor of George Mason.
After the Patriots called a timeout, the Bobcats got within three points after Elena Giacomini recorded a kill with the assist from Damla Gunes. However, three straight points from George Mason sealed the first set, 25-19.
SET TWO (27-25)
The Bobcats jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead, forcing the Patriots to call an early timeout. Out of the break, the Patriots crept back into the match, making it a 20-17 set before calling their second timeout.
With the Bobcats on set point, the Patriots scored two straight points, forcing the Bobcats to use a timeout of their own. Out of the timeout, the Patriots tallied two straight points to tie the set at 24. A kill from Giacomini made it 25-24 Bobcats, but three straight points from George Mason would give the Patriots the second set, 27-25.
SET THREE (17-25)
The third set saw both teams trade points early on until the Bobcats pulled ahead, 11-9, which forced the Patriots to use a timeout. The Bobcats used an 8-3 run to open a 19-12 lead as George Mason used their final timeout of the set.
Out of their timeout, the Patriots got two straight points, but the Bobcats scored six of the last nine points to earn the victory in set three, 25-17.
SET FOUR (28-26)
The fourth set started with runs from both teams. First the Bobcats jumped out 4-0, but then the Patriots responded with three straight points. QU would then respond with three straight points and ultimately take a 10-4 lead before George Mason called a timeout.
The battle continued and the Patriots tied the game at eleven which caused Kyle Robinson to call a timeout. Out of the break, the Bobcats took the lead, making it 19-17, before George Mason used their final timeout of the fourth set. The seesaw battle continued, but ultimately the Patriots got the best of the Bobcats, downing them in the fifth set, 28-26.

The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow as they take on William & Mary at 1 PM and Bucknell at 3:30 PM to wrap up their schedule at the William & Mary Invitational.

- Elena Giacomini led the Bobcats with 19 kills and 20.5 points in the effort. Giacomini also recorded three total blocks in the loss.
- Leilani-kai Giusta picked up her second straight double-double as she recorded 12 kills and 10 digs.
- Damla Gunes, Fa'avae Kimsel Moe, and Yagmur Gunes each recorded three service aces.
- Chloe Ka'ahanui recorded 18 assists and Damla Gunes recorded 17 assists to lead the team.
- The Bobcats had nine service aces compared to two from George Mason.
