Bobcats Fall at LIU in Tuesday Matchup

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac women's volleyball team fell to the LIU Sharks, 3-2, in the Tuesday night matchup in Brooklyn, New York. Leilani-kai Giusta led the Bobcats with 19 kills and 18 digs for a double-double.
Elena Giacomini (14 kills, 17 digs) and Ginevra Giovagnoni (12 kills, 12 digs) also recorded double-doubles in the loss.

SET ONE (25-23, LIU)
The Bobcats jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the opening set, which forced the Sharks to take their first timeout of the match. Ginevra Giovagnoni led the team with three kills at the first break in the action.
Out of the break, the Sharks went on a 10-6 run to make it a one-point game (20-19, QU), causing Kyle Robinson to call a timeout. The Sharks came out of the timeout and went on a run once again to take a 23-21 lead in the set. After a QU timeout, the Sharks finished off the set to go ahead one set to none.
SET TWO (17-25)
After LIU opened the set with a point, the Bobcats went on a 10-0 run to overtake the lead. Leilani-kai Giusta recorded two kills in that span for the Bobcats. The hosts would respond with a 4-2 run as the Bobcats called a timeout to stop the momentum.
Out of the break, Quinnipiac rode a 13-11 run to earn the victory in the second set. In that run, Ginevra Giovagnoni recorded a team-high six kills.
SET THREE (25-21)
The home team jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the third set as the Sharks called a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Bobcats went on a 9-4 run to tie the third set at 14 points. Leilani-kai Giusta recorded three kills to help the Bobcats even up the set.
Out of the break, the Sharks went on a run of their own, 10-7, to set themselves up for set point which caused the Bobcats to call a timeout.
SET FOUR (20-25)
The back-and-forth fourth set saw the Bobcats pull ahead 15-12 which caused the Sharks to call their first timeout of the set. Yagmur Gunes and Elena Giacomini tied for the team lead with three kills each in that span.
The seesaw battle continued as the Sharks got within one (18-17) before QU called a timeout. The Bobcats scored three straight points out of their timeout and forced the Sharks to call a timeout.
SET FIVE (15-10)
LIU jumped out to a 9-4 advantage in the decisive set before the Bobcats called a timeout. After the timeout, the Bobcats and Sharks traded points, but the home team still held a 12-7 lead as QU called their final timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Sharks kept the pressure on the Bobcats and defeated QU 15-10 in the decisive fifth set.
NOTES:
The Bobcats will compete at the William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Virginia as they open against George Mason on Friday, September 6th at 4 PM.

- Damla Gunes recorded 49 assists and two kills in five sets.
- Fa'avae Kimsel Moe and Yagmur Gunes both recorded ten digs.
- The Bobcats had 11 service aces compared to seven from the Sharks.
