QU Opens Invitational With Win Over Navy, Loss to ODU

FAIRFAX, V.A. – Kyle Robinson and his squad opened the George Mason Invite winning their first match of the day against Navy in five sets. In the afternoon match, the Bobcats fell to the Old Dominion Monarchs in four sets.
Elena Giacomini (20 digs, 16 kills), Yagmur Gunes (14 kills, 12 digs), and Leilani-kai Giusta (14 digs, 13 kills) each recorded a double-double in the win over Navy. Alexandra Tennon and Elena Giacomini each recorded four service aces in the win.
Yagmur Gunes led the way in the loss against Old Dominion with 13 kills, while also recording 10 digs for a double-double.

SET ONE (25-15, Quinnipiac)
Navy opened the game with a 6-4 advantage before the Bobcats responded with six straight points. The 6-0 run was capped off by a service ace from Leilani-kai Giusta and forced Navy to call a timeout.
Quinnipiac came out of the break and scored five of the next seven points to force Navy to call their final timeout of the set as they were down 15-8. The Bobcats used a 10-7 run to close out the set victory, 25-15.
SET TWO (26-24)
The second set started with the two teams trading points to a 5-5 tie before Navy opened up a 8-5 lead to cause Quinnipiac to use a timeout. QU and Navy continued to trade points as they were even at 16 late in the second set.
After the two teams were even at 16, the Bobcats opened a 20-17 lead to cause Navy to use their first timeout of the set. The Bobcats called their second timeout after Navy made it a one-point game, 22-21. The Bobcats were able to close out the set after a kill and an ace from Leilani-kai Giusta.
SET THREE (17-25)
Navy had their backs against the wall and opened to a 15-11 lead in the third set at the media timeout.
Out of the break, Navy closed out the set on a 10-6 run to keep themselves in the match, but still trailing two sets to one.
SET FOUR (26-28)
The Midshipmen forced the Bobcats to call their first timeout of the set as they held a 12-8 lead in the fourth set. Out of the break, the Bobcats were able to even the game at 17 before Navy scored the next two points to take a 19-17 lead.
After a Quinnipiac timeout, the Bobcats were able to get even at 22, forcing Navy to call their second timeout of the set. The back-and-forth set continued until Navy scored the final two points of the set to claim the 28-26 set victory.
SET FIVE (15-13)
The two sides were even at four points apiece before the Midshipmen called their first timeout of the final set. Navy responded and went up 9-8 before Quinnipiac rallied for four straight points to take the 12-9 lead.
After a Navy timeout, the Bobcats were able to close out the match win after winning the decisive fifth set 15-13.
Old Dominion 3, Quinnipiac 1
SET ONE (25-23, Quinnipiac)
Quinnipiac and Old Dominion traded points throughout the first set as they two teams saw themselves even at 19 in the late stages. After QU went up 21-19, Old Dominion called their first timeout of the set.
Out of the break, Old Dominion went on a bit of a run to take the lead, 23-22. However, after Kyle Robinson called a timeout, the Bobcats rallied for three straight points to win the first set.
SET TWO (21-25)
The two sides were even throughout the second set as they were tied at 14. Two straight attack errors from Old Dominion gave the Bobcats a 16-14 lead as the Monarchs called a timeout.
Out of the break, Old Dominion was able to knot the set back up at 19 before QU scored two straight points, forcing the Monarchs to call their final timeout of the set. After Old Dominion took a 23-21 lead, the Bobcats used a timeout. The Monarchs notched back-to-back points out of the break to win the second set.
SET THREE (17-25)
The two teams were tied at 17 in the third set before Old Dominion recorded back-to-back points to force QU to call a timeout.
After the timeout, the Monarchs went on an 8-2 run to close out the third set, 25-17.
SET FOUR (23-25)
Old Dominion jumped out to a 9-5 lead which forced Quinnipiac to use their first timeout of the set. Out of the break, the Bobcats were able to bounce back, and they saw themselves tied at 19 with the Monarchs.
ODU got two straight points to go up 21-19 as QU called their final timeout of the set. After the timeout, the Monarchs were able to halt the Quinnipiac comeback and win the match.
NOTES:
The Bobcats are back in action tomorrow, Saturday Sep. 14, as they wrap up play at the George Mason Invite against the hosts, George Mason at 2:30 PM.
