Quinnipiac Races Out to 3-0 Lead, Holds On to Continue Home Dominance
HAMDEN, Conn. — The No. 8 Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team held off a third-period rally from Big Ten foe Penn State, knocking off the Nittany Lions 3-2 in front of 3,477 fans at M&T Bank Arena on Saturday night.
Jeremy Wilmer led the way with a pair of goals, the first and the third of the night for Quinnipiac, and Andon Cerbone potted his first of the season to give the Bobcats just enough.
The Boston University transfer Wilmer started the scoring in the first, deflecting a shot from first-year Aaron Schwartz to give the Bobcats the early advantage.
It was Cerbone 2:13 later, deflecting home a Cooper Moore shot from the point to give the Bobcats a two-goal lead.
Wilmer added his second just 66 seconds into the second, with another point-blank deflection to make it 3-0.
The Nittany Lions would rally back, holding the Bobcats scoreless for the rest of the night and scoring two of their own in the first 6:04 of the third, but Quinnipiac held strong the rest of the way to ensure the win on home ice.
STATS AND NOTES
The Bobcats head north for a Top 10 weekend in Maine against the Black Bears, who are also off to a 1-0 start. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. on Friday and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, both of which can be seen live on ESPN+.
