HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac field hockey looks to pick up two victories over the weekend, as the Bobcats travel to take on BIG EAST foe Old Dominion on Friday at 2 p.m., before welcoming Lafayette to Hamden on Sunday at noon for Senior Day.
HOT STREAK
- Quinnipiac held a three-game win streak from Sept. 8 - Sept. 15
- The Bobcats started the season at 0-2 before picking up three straight victories over Dartmouth, Bryant and Providence
- During its three-game win streak, the Bobcats outscored opponents 8-3
THE NINA KLEIN ERA
- Nina Klein was named the head field hockey coach and second coach in program history, effective Friday, April 28, 2023, replacing longtime head coach Becca Main
- A selector for USA Field Hockey U16 goalkeepers, Klein returned to Quinnipiac after serving as the assistant field hockey coach at Boston College for the 2022 season.
- Before working at Boston College, Klein served under former Quinnipiac field hockey head coach Becca Main for four seasons
- Klein picked up her first career win as a head coach on Sept. 8, 2023 with a 2-1 victory over Dartmouth on the road
- Klein earned the first home win of her head coaching career on Sept. 13, 2023 with a 4-1 victory over Bryant
- Klein earned her first BIG EAST win as a head coach in a 2-1 win over Providence on Sept. 15
KLEIN FOR TEAM USA
- Quinnipiac field hockey Head Coach Nina Klein was named to the USA Field Hockey, U18 Junior High-Performance staff as an Assistant Coach for the 2023-2024 cycle
- Klein was named to the staff by USAFH Director of High-Performance Craig Parnham and USAFH Director of Junior High-Performance Grant Fulton in late September.
- While with Team USA, Klein will work predominantly with the goalkeepers and backfield players at the training and selection camp
- The training camp will extend from December 1-3, at the Home of USA Field Hockey in Charlotte, North Carolina at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte Campus.
YOU GO LU
- Junior forward Lucia Pompeo was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, Sept. 19
- Pompeo garnering BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors marks the first time since 2016 that a Bobcat has earned the award, as Savanna Reilly was the last Quinnipiac student-athlete to secure the honor
- Lucia Pompeo scored three goals for six points in a 2-0 week for the Bobcats
- Her three goals came on seven total shots for a blistering 0.428 shot percentage
- Pompeo scored two goals, including the game-winner in Quinnipiac's 4-1 victory over Bryant on Wednesday
- She followed that performance with the game-winning goal in Friday's match against Providence in the BIG EAST opener, where the Bobcats walked away as the victors, 2-1
- On the season, Pompeo ranks second on the team in goals with five and ranks 13th in the BIG EAST in goals per game (0.38).
STELLAR STELLA
- Named the Preseason BIG EAST Co-Midfielder of the Year, Stella Tegtmeier is off to a hot start to the season
- Tegtmeier has totaled six goals and five assists for 17 points on the season
- Tegtmeier leads the team with six goals, five assists and 17 points
- Tegtmeier is averaging 0.38 assists per game, which ranks 58th in the nation and 10th in the BIG EAST
- Tegtmeier is averaging 1.31 points per game, which ranks 55th in the nation and seventh in the BIG EAST
- Tegtmeier has six multi-point games this season
- Tegtmeier has two multi-goal games this season
MARVELOUS MASSARELLI
- Emilia Massarelli is having a solid junior campaign in 2023
- Massarelli boasts six goals and an assist for 13 points on the season
- Her six goals leads the team, while her 13 points rank second
- Massarelli has scored three goals in her last four games
- Massarelli recorded a hat trick in the season-opener, notching three goals against New Hampshire on Aug. 25
- Massarelli is averaging 0.67 goals per game and 1.44 points per game
TOP-TIER TORRES
- Sophomore keeper Cristina Torres has shown growth from her rookie season
- Torres boasts a 0.745 save percentage, which ranks 31st in the nation and second in the BIG EAST
- Torres is averaging 5.85 saves per game, which ranks 15th in the nation and first in the BIG EAST
- Torres is averaging 7.00 saves per game over her last four games
- Torres recorded her first shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over Maine at home on Oct. 8
BUILDING A FOUNDATION
- Last season the Bobcats finished with eight wins, the most since the 2015 season
- Quinnipiac earned two wins over ranked opponents last season, the most in program history
- The Bobcats return 14 student-athletes that saw time on the turf
PRESEASON HONORS
- Stella Tegtmeier has been named the BIG EAST Preseason Co-Midfielder of the Year, along with garnering Preseason All-BIG EAST Team honors, as announced by the conference office on Thursday, August 17
- Since joining the conference, Tegtmeier is the first Bobcats' student-athlete to earn a Preseason BIG EAST major award and the fourth player in program history to be named to a Preseason All-BIG EAST Team
- Tegtmeier's senior campaign with the Bobcats was highlighted with eight goals, tying for the team lead with Emilia Massarelli and leading the Bobcats in assists (8) and points (24). Tegtmeier's goal total was career-high for the standout while her 24 points for the season were also the most for her career.
LEADERS OF THE NEXT CHAPTER
- Olivia Howard, Julianna Cappello, and Micaela Grajales earned leadership roles for the upcoming season, as they were named captains by their teammates and coaches
- Cappello and Howard are two-time captains, while this is the first year in the role for Grajales
- Last season Howard appeared in a career-best 19 games last season, with her lone goal of the season being the game-winner in Quinnipiac's 3-0 win over Sacred Heart on Oct. 30.
- Cappello has played in 61 games over four seasons and has started in 55 of those, totaling 13 goals and five assists for 31 points
NEXT UP
- The Bobcats will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 27 when QU plays host to BIG EAST foe Temple
- The match is set for a 3 p.m. start
