HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac Athletics & QCoor hosted its inaugural Athletics Day of Service on Nov. 8.
The Bobcats hosted four projects on and around campus intentionally chosen to support Hamden non-profits and residents:
· Making fleece tie blankets for Children's Center of Hamden
· Making holiday cards for residents at Whitney Manor
· Cleaning up trails at Sleeping Giant State Park
· Cleaning trash and removing leaves from Farmington Canal Trail
In total, QU student-athletes made 40 blankets for the Children's Center of Hamden, made 100+ cards and decorations for residents at Whitney Manor, and logged 400+ hours of community service.
"The act of voting on Election Day is important, but it's also a day to educate our athletes on the importance of giving back and being actively engaged and involved in our communities. Our student-athletes already do an amazing job of serving others throughout the entire year, and our student-athlete led QCoor group put together great opportunities for each team to participate in on Election Day for our first annual Day of Service." - Shanna Alexander, Senior Associate Athletic Director
"It was an amazing experience to serve the Hamden Community by cleaning up the rail trails and streets of Hamden. These are the streets we as runners use every day and it's always great to make sure they are clean because it's a privilege to use them. From doing this civic engagement Men's Cross Country is looking forward to doing more things in the community." - Ohm Patel, Men's Cross Country SAAC Representative
"This day of service for athletes gave us a chance to bond with our teammates while also contributing to our community. I know the women on my team and I had a blast making blankets together for the Children's Center of Hamden!" - Melanie Reed, Acrobatics & Tumbling, QCoor Vice President
"Any chance we have to give back to the Hamden community is so amazing. Working with the kids and seeing how passionate they were to learn the game of basketball was a great feeling. We're excited to continue working with Children's Center of Hamden for future opportunities." - Rose Caverly, WBB & SAAC President
A special thanks to those who helped make this event a success: John Copela & QU Facilities, Sarah Lockery (Children's Center in Hamden), and Leah Richards (QU)
This initiative happened in conjunction with the MAAC ALL IN TO VOTE initiative, and with the support of Tom Ellett and the Voter Registration and Engagement Committee at Quinnipiac.
