Free's 21 Points Leads Bobcats Past Manhattan at Home

HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Amani Free scored a season-high 21 points and added eight rebounds to lead the Quinnipiac women's basketball team past MAAC foe Manhattan, 72-65, Saturday afternoon inside of the People's United Center.
Mackenzie DeWees totaled 16 points, 10 rebounds and six steals for the Bobcats in the victory. Rose Caverly contributed 11 points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Bobcats improved to 10-7 on the season and 5-3 in the MAAC with the win, while the Jaspers fell to 9-8 on the campaign and 4-4 in conference-play.

- The Jaspers used the opening five minutes of play to jump out to an 11-2 lead, forcing the Bobcats to call a timeout at the midway point of the first quarter
- Manhattan's lead extended to as much as 18-6 before taking an 18-7 lead into the second quarter
- Quinnipiac opened the second quarter with a swift 7-0 run to trim the deficit to 18-14 with 7:34 left in the period
- Amani Free scored five of the Bobcats' seven points during the run
- Manhattan responded with a 9-0 run of their own to extend its lead to 27-14 with 5:06 left in the first half
- The Jaspers' lead reached as much as 33-21 with 2:20 left in the first half
- The Bobcats closed the half with a 10-0 run, led by five points from Makenzie Helms to trim the deficit to 33-31 into the break
- After falling behind 37-33 in the third quarter, Quinnipiac responded with an 8-2 run to push ahead 41-39
- The run was capped by a three from Amani Free with 5:09 to go in the third
- The two sides traded buckets, with Manhattan holding a narrow 46-44 lead with two minutes left in the third
- However, the Bobcats closed the third quarter with a 7-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Rose Caverly to give Quinnipiac a five-point lead into the fourth
- After Manhattan cut the Quinnipiac lead to three, the Bobcats responded with an 11-2 run to extend their lead to 62-50 with 4:45 left in regulation
- The lead proved to be too much for Manhattan, as Quinnipiac eventually held on for the 72-65 victory
- The win over Manhattan marked Quinnipiac's fourth win in its last five games
- Amani Free led the way with a season-high 21 points and added eight rebounds
- Free scored 11 of her 21 points in the first half
- Mackenzie DeWees added 16 points, 10 rebounds and six steals
- DeWees scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half
- DeWees has registered five or more steals in eight of Quinnipiac's games
