Men's Ice Hockey Netminder Third in Program History to Earn Top Goaltending Honor
ALBANY, N.Y. – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey senior goaltender Keith Petruzzelli has been named the ECAC Hockey Ken Dryden Goaltender of the Year, as announced by the league office on Thursday, March 18.
Petruzzelli is the third Quinnipiac goaltender to win ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Year honors, joining Andrew Shortridge '20 in the 2018-19 season and Eric Hartzell in his record-breaking 2012-13 season. He is the fourth Bobcats' goaltender to win a league goaltending award as Jamie Holden '05 won the Atlantic Hockey Goaltending Award in 2003-04.
Petruzzelli was named to the ECAC Hockey First Team on Wednesday, his first all-league selection and was the third goaltender in program history named to the All-ECAC Hockey First Team.
Earlier this season, Petruzzelli was named the league's goaltender of the week four times and earned player of the week honors once on Jan. 18. He was also named the second star of the week on Dec. 21 and earned ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Month honors in February.
Petruzzelli has started all 27 games this season and has made 57 consecutive starts dating back to the season opener of the 2019-20 season.
He leads all ECAC Hockey goaltenders with 17 wins, four shutouts, a 1.78 GAA, .929 save percentage and 612 shots as he started every game in 2020-21. Petruzzelli leads all goaltenders in conference only games with 10 wins and three shutouts.
Nationally, Petruzzelli is fourth with 17 wins and four shutouts, as well as sixth with a 1.78 GAA. Petruzzelli is also 10th with a .929 save percentage. He leads the nation with 27 starts and minutes played with 1581:04.
Petruzzelli became the 27th goaltender in NCAA Men's Ice Hockey history to record three consecutive shutouts from Jan. 10-17 and was the second Quinnipiac men's ice hockey goalie to do so after Michael Garteig '16 in 2015-16. Petruzzelli finished his shutout streak at 201:41, the second-longest streak in program history.
Quinnipiac men's ice hockey returns to the ice on Saturday as the Bobcats chase their second Whitelaw Cup as hosts of the 2021 ECAC Hockey Championship Game against the winner of Thursday's semifinal between St. Lawrence and Colgate.
