Volleyball Falls Short at Home in Five-Set Thriller Against Marist

HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Maggie Baker tallied a team-high 16 kills and added 14 digs for the double-double, while senior Nicole Legg recorded 14 kills and 10 blocks for a double-double, as the Quinnipiac volleyball team fell in five sets against Marist at home on Burt Kahn Court on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Aryanah Diaz contributed nine kills and a team-high 15 digs for the Bobcats in the loss.

QUINNIPIAC STATISTICAL LEADERS
The Bobcats jumped ahead 9-4 behind three kills from Maggie Baker to force an early timeout from Marist. The Red Foxes responded with a 6-2 run of their own to cut the Quinnipiac lead to 11-10, forcing the Bobcats to burn a timeout. After Quinnipiac built its lead 15-12, Marist responded with a 5-0 run to go up 17-15, forcing the Bobcats to use their final timeout of the set. After falling behind 18-15, the Bobcats went on a 4-0 run, powered by two service aces from Faave Kimsel Moe. The two sides battled to a 21-21 tie before Marist used its final timeout of the set. With the set tied at 24-24, the Red Foxes scored back-to-back kills to secure the set win.
SET TWO (25-21)
The two sides traded points to a 7-7 tie in the set before Marist went on a 4-1 run to push ahead 11-8, forcing Quinnipiac to use its first timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, the Bobcats rallied to tie the set at 16-16 before Marist scored two consecutive points to go ahead 18-16. Quinnipiac battled back with two points of their own to knot the set, however, Marist scored two straight points to push ahead 20-18 before Quinnipiac used its final timeout of the set. The deficit proved to be too much for the Bobcats, as they eventually fell in the set 25-21.
SET THREE (17-25)
The two sides remained even through the set, playing to a 10-10 tie before Quinnipiac scored two straight points to force Marist to take a timeout. The Bobcats scored two straight points out of the break, forcing the Red Foxes to blow their final timeout of the set. Quinnipiac pushed its lead to as much as 23-16 before securing the 25-17 set victory.
SET FOUR (22-25)
The two sides remained nearly even through the set until Quinnipiac pushed ahead 12-8. Marist responded with a 6-2 run to knot the set at 14-14. However, back-to-back kills from Nicole Legg and Baker gave the Bobcats a two-point lead, forcing Marist to burn their first timeout of the set. Out of the break, the Red Foxes tallied three straight points, capped by an ace to go up one to force the Bobcats to use their first timeout of the set. All tied up at 21-21, Aryanah Diaz scored a kill, followed by a service ace to give Quinnipiac a 23-21 lead into the Marist timeout. With the Bobcats holding set point, Baker came through in the clutch with a kill to steal the fourth set, 25-22.

The two sides remained even early in the set, playing to a 7-7 tie before a Marist service ace and a Quinnipiac ball-handling error saw the Red Foxes push ahead 9-7, forcing the Bobcats to call a timeout. Quinnipiac responded with back-to-back kills from Diaz and Baker out of the break to force Marist to call its first timeout of the set with the score knotted at 9-9. Out of the timeout, Marist scored two straight points to force Quinnipiac to take its final timeout of the match trailing 11-9. The timeout couldn't break Marist's momentum, as the Red Foxes took the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.
