Sixth Former Bobcat to Sign with an NWHL Organization this Offseason
DANBURY, Conn. - Former Quinnipiac women's ice hockey player Melissa Samoskevich '19 has signed with the NWHL's Connecticut Whale. Samoskevich is the sixth Bobcat to sign with an NWHL organization this season.
"I'm very excited to be part of the Connecticut Whale family," said Samoskevich. "I've taken a lot of pride in playing CT hockey since I was very young, and I'm happy to continue to play near home in my professional career. It will be great to see my family in the stands again! I look forward to learning and growing as a player and person through collaboration with Coach Colton Orr, the entire staff, and my new teammates. I can't wait to get the NWHL season started!"
The Sandy Hook, Conn., native is the 12th Quinnipiac women's ice hockey alum to sign a professional contract with an NWHL team. Since 2017, eight alums have signed with the Whale and four more have signed to played with other NWHL teams.
Most recently, four Quinnipiac alumnae signed with the NWHL's newest organization, the Toronto Six. Sarah-Eve Coutu-Godbout, Emma Greco, Kelly Babstock and Shiann Darkangelo will all play together in Toronto once the NWHL season commences. Abbie Ives '20 also signed with the Connecticut Whale on May 21, 2020.
Samoskevich was drafted second overall to the Whale in the 2018-19 Draft, but did not end up playing in the league that year. Most recently, she has played with the Professional Women's Hockey Player's Association (PWHPA) in tournaments across the country and Canada. She also played for the U.S. Women's National Team at the 2019 IIHF World Championship in Finland and the 2018 Four Nations Cup, earning a gold medal.
