Bobcats Assistant Captain is First Member of Class of 2020 to Sign Pro Deal
HARTFORD, Conn. – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey senior forward Alex Whelan (Ramsey, New Jersey) has signed an AHL contract with the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolf Pack, as announced by the organization on Wednesday, March 25.
Whelan is the first member of the Class of 2020 to sign a professional contract after agreeing to terms with the Wolf Pack.
In addition to being the first to join a professional organization, Whelan also joins a rich group of former Bobcats in the AHL and NHL as he will be the eighth to be on active roster at that level. Currently at the AHL level is Sam Anas (Iowa Wild), Tanner MacMaster (Toronto Marlies), Brogan Rafferty (Utica Comets) and Travis St. Denis (Bridgeport Sound Tigers).
Whelan was in the midst of an impressive senior season before it was cut short prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. He scored 13 goals for a third straight season and added 11 assists for 24 points, with all three totals good for his second-most in a single-season.
He recorded a six-game point streak from Nov. 30-Jan. 10, good for the longest point streak of his career. A week later, Whelan recorded his second career hat trick with three goals at Holy Cross and finished off the season with a career-high three assists in the 5-0 shutout of Yale.
Throughout his career, Whelan has been a prolific scorer for the Bobcats as he scored at least 13 goals in three consecutive seasons and finished his career tied with Matt Goodrich '99 and Shawn Mansoff '01 for 24th in program history with 48 career goals. He added 30 assists throughout his four seasons to finish with 78 career points in 141 games.
Over his final two seasons, Whelan made his biggest impact with 26 goals and 23 assists for 49 points. As a junior, Whelan set career-highs with 12 assists and 25 points while he set a career-high with 16 goals as a sophomore.
